We are paying three dollars more per gallon here in Germany because of the stupid war your country started in Iran, while you are largely unaffected yourself because of your own oil production
America just cares about it’s own interests, and every time I see a country work with them, I’m just waiting for the betrayal to come.
The world is still stupid though and believes that Trump is an idiot, despite him accomplishing his every goal. This place is funny because there are a lot of people here unable to think strategically. They think conflicts between countries are accidents and nobody stands to gain anything. :)
Largely unaffected? Our prices have soared since the war in Iran. Our prices were substantially lower before Iran because of our local oil production but it’s very clear to most Americans that our fossil fuel consumption is largely supplemented but foreign oil. And we are seeing the result at the pump. Sorry you’re paying even more but you were paying more than us before too.

I’ve started blasting death metal as load as possible when this happens. If my ears are going to be assaulted I’ll just double down with the noise i want to hear. Luckily the pump i go to has never done this so i try and go there everytime.
Some/most gas stations that auditorily assault us like this also have the option to mute the sound. Usually a vertical row of buttons on the right side of the screen, push each button sequentially from top to bottom and the sound might mute.
Usually the top middle button, at least at Shell stations in my experience

Some local hero around here has been stabbing ball point pens into the speakers on them.
Theyre smart to that already, most of the ad pumps I’ve run into have speakers hidden inside the housing that you can’t access anymore, and the “bottom left button on the screen mutes the ad” trick is disabled.
At this stage I just boycott those stations, leave a 2 star review on Google and deal with paying an extra 15c a gallon a couple blocks away.

Ah so the oil companies approached the advertisers and were like boy have we got an idea? All gas stations are not multi billion dollar companies lol, the last two local ones i saw change hands went for under $1M and they have local owners, only one had ads, and it was part of the new owners upgrades… so like that was a member of my community who replaced gas tanks to sell ads. It’s clearly worth some money, and was not forced upon them.

When it’s obvious from the start you can just drive to a different station (for now), but when it sneaks up on me is when I get angry.

I just got a 2023 id.4 for 20k, and I charge off the grid.
Right… I drive a 20 year old Toyota Yaris that gets 40mpg, and i drive like 30 miles a week max, more like 15. It cost me $5,000 3 years ago and i pray every day it last another 3 years. Theres absolutely no cost savings for me dropping $20k on an EV to save 50-75 gallons of gas a year. I dropped $10-12,000 on solar to save $4,000 a year on power and heating. One of these is a good use of money one of them is virtue signaling…

I got a 2007 A6 Allroad Quattro for 1.8k. Let me know when I can get an EV for that price, with highway cruising range (I get about 1000 km on a tank but I’d find 400-500 acceptable on an EV).
So far the closest and most tempting are old Tesla Model S, which I could get for 15k, but I’m not a fan of touchscreens, I prefer a proper interior. And not sure I should give money to someone who bought a car off Elon Musk and will likely do it again. Runner up is Jaguar I Pace which is super cheap because… Jaguar decided to pretend its old lineup doesn’t exist and is discontinuing parts production.
Even then, being able to charge at home is incredibly privileged. Not everyone lives in a single-family home. I do, but if I didn’t, charging would cost as much as fuel before the Iran war.
Yeah, the 200% charge and extra 10-20k to get it insurable is a no from me.

Yea i started planning one out this spring and opted for DIY. its still expensive as fuck and i hate myself for taking on the project. But i also cant afford to heat my house with kerosene anymore so something had to break. it was my back and my bank they broke. Not to mention Tariff King bumped the prices up on everything 50% or more. It’s worth the peace of mind, but its honestly a 10k adventure.

I bought the place from an 80 year old lady who had weird imitation kerosene lantern lighting from the 1980s, and I have Amish down the road. We do be trying to pretend its 1904 around here as much as possible.
I live in a mobile home in rural maine. Most of rural maine heats with regular heating oil, but if you have to keep your oil tanks outside in the winter, the oil will freeze so you need to pay extra for Kerosene. It’s a poor tax!

The furnaces are awesome, I’m keeping mine for a back up unit. In the more brutal storms and dark winters the solar and the heat pumps start struggling. I imagine i’ll still get some use out of the Old Beast.

I have yet to encounter a gas station pump that displays ads that hasn’t been wholly vandalized to the point of non-functionality. I think I’d have to find a gas station being built the day they install the pumps to actually see them working. And then I would break them myself.
There are a couple of American Express cards that give you 3% cash back on Gas (including one with a low annual fee, that also gives 6% back on groceries up to the first $6000 spent per year).
That helps.
There’s a gas station chain near me that doesn’t play ads, usually has the best prices, and gives 10c off per gallon if you use their app linked to a checking account…that helps, too.
I miss the days when that was the better deal…
