    They get paid on the stations built not stations operational. So while they do try to keep them up and running, the priority is much lower on their list since it isn’t their main economic driver.

    Pretty well done.

    Hopefully we can get rid of the screens, card readers, etc. EU makes this all work pretty well, but it does require more effort.

      I’ll need a lot of charging stations at the major rest stops along the I80/90 corridors. Until that happens, I’ll still have an ICE car.

      It’s part of it for sure. It’s hard for enthusiasts to swallow but “it’s not that bad” for our patience levels is “screw this, I’m never using it again” for normal folk. In psychology people only need 2 bad experiences to lose trust in something all together and it’s important people realize that the “it just works” way of things is what is needed for mass adoption.

        Everyone better hope I don’t buy an electric car. So far, once I find a product or service I like, within a year the product is gone: Adam’s peanut butter, raw milk, wool socks. Or the convenience is gone: someone drove a PU into my local KFC six months ago… clear into the bathroom. Someone else drove into my local laundromat three months ago, never fixed. And no one will sell me a carburetor for my Ford C600. When I built a small all-electric limousine factory in 1995, neither Ford (Between 1979 and 1982, a number of electric Ford Couriers were produced) or Hughes/GM would sell me a motor-controller package. I did pick up two EV-1 15kva motor-controllers, new-in-the-crate in 2000, GM had failed to renew their patents. To Late:(

    Logical answer is there’s not enough money in it for companies to maintain it. My dumb tinfoil hat conspiracy theory is this is on purpose to make people dislike driving EV’s and want to return to gas cars.

      I kind of feel the same, but I also wanted to try to get some data. I decided to check on Greenway, who I think is the biggest operator of charging stations in Poland - they claim they have 2500 stations. Out of the 2500, I checked the issue status of any charging location in Poland where the issues were raised 14+ days ago and I went back 60 days. Oddly, Greenway will note when there is an issue with a charger, but not when the issue is resolved. So I had to check this all manually. I looked at issues 14+ days ago because I feel that 14 days is probably about the quickest such issues are ever going to be fixed by any company.

      From 14+ days ago and going back 60 days, I noted 18 charging locations impacted (one or more plugs not operational/lower charging speeds). Of those 18, 13 issues had been resolved and 5 issues were yet to be resolved. Both the quantity of issues and quantity of resolved issues seems quite reasonable to me.

      Yes, this is mostly a US issue, because we got stuck with Volkswagen for the majority of our CCS1 fast charging infrastructure and they suck. We should have just taken the fines from Volkswagen and paid Tesla to build their network even faster.

    Really think there should be some kind of legislation requiring EV chargers to allow charging by default whenever there’s some type of software issue like payment processor down/cellular network down etc.

    It would incentivize the provider to get it fixed ASAP if it actually cost them money.

    It’s weird how Hydro Quebec is able to get all of this working reliably with Electric Circuit in very challenging weather… You know who else gets hardware to work out in the elements? Banks with ATMs, fuel companies with fuel pumps, municipalities with parking meters, parking garages with pay terminals, vending machine companies, etc, etc, etc, etc, etc, etc…

    “We’re too incompetent to make this work.” is not a valid excuse for these charge network operators.

    Because we hired a European company who is only doing this because they were forced to as reparation for deliberatly polluting our air with poorly engineered vehicles. The end.

    The American company with a vested interest in making reliable fast chargers has been spectacularly successful. Maybe we should hire them to build out a huge network, and kick VW back to Europe.

    Can anyone outside of the US comment on the situation in their country/ region? I know CCS is the standard in Europe and I believe Tesla’s made in Europe even have to have CCS not NACS. Are the issues highlighted in this video also experienced outside of the US?

      The hilarious thing about this being a US problem is that it’s a European company screwing us over with their malicious compliance. We should send them home and let Tesla build out our infrastructure. They seem to have a much better strategy and far higher reliability.

      No. Switzerland (+Germany and Austria). I’ve not experienced any issues and the forums don’t seem to suggest issues are common either. And yes, Teslas sold here have standard connectors, as have the superchargers, some of which are open to all brands.

      I also think it’s a missed opportunity. You’re going to be there for 15 - 45 minutes to charge why not have a convenience store / coffee shop / waiting area for drivers who are charging.

    VW because of dieselgate got a 2 billion dollar penalty and built an EV public charge infrastructure but of course it was malicious compliance. Until they are as profitable as gas stations its gonna be tough.

      Trouble is, gas stations aren’t actually profitable. It’s about a 5 cent per gallon markup, and the average station sells 4000 gallons per day. Granted, that’s $73000 per year, but factor in the cost to maintain the site, and it’s a loss leader. In reality, gas stations make their money on the convenience or grocery stores that are attached to them.

      Do you want to know the crazy part? The 4x markup on the cost of electricity and the simple nature of a DC fast charger when compared to a gas pump means that they already are more profitable… But since gas pumps are a loss leader, that’s not saying much.

        In CA, CostCo can sell gas almost a dollar less than the competition. I doubt they are selling at a loss, so I doubt the competition only makes 5c a gallon
