Well yeah, since that’s what most people drive now.
Good. People shouldn’t be playing in the road anymore.
Maybe that’s why they want boxy vehicles…
…because of the implication
Bruh 😂
Are these people in any danger?….
No, not at all. But they won’t say no. Because of the implication.
But they’re out on the open road, they don’t have any choice, they can’t run away…
Says the guy with a model X lol
Gets people to rethink stepping out into traffice.
Even when the hood isn’t that high, a boxy front-end — with a grille that’s nearly vertical and a hood that goes almost straight out from the windshield — is more likely to cause death or serious injury to a pedestrian. In general, vehicles with box-shaped front ends, even when they’re only medium height, are roughly 26% more likely to kill a pedestrian, according to the IIHS.
The article clarifies that it’s the vertical and boxy shaped front end that is the cause of more lethal torso injuries.
A sporty shaped front end will put it back to normal ( even more if lower).
So cars with pop-up headlights would be even safer.
Bring back the wedge!
Bring back Pontiac and market a C8 clone with pop ups as a second gen Fiero
I think we should all just drive Ferrari F40s. 😎
Ferrari F40, the dream. Reality would be a Bricklin SV1.
Nah, the reality would be Fieros
Weren’t the boxy front ends more or less required because of EU pedestrian standards to begin with?
No, common misperception. Not sure why it’s so popular to confuse the front edge of the hood with the other side of it.
Cybertruck out there aiming to maim.
Thing would maim the Hulk. It would turn you and me into Atrain dust.
This has been continually shown and many of this subs proliferate members deny it
So if I’m gonna hit a pedestrian and don’t want to kill then, just maim them, choose a Tesla, got it
a boxy front-end — with a grille that’s nearly vertical and a hood that goes almost straight out from the windshield
This is also an accurate description of the regular 3-Door Mini Cooper Hardtop.
The Mini is obviously much smaller but it also has a pretty noticeably sloped hood that is not, in fact, pretty much straight out from the windshield to the grill like a Silverado, F150, Acadia, etc
Damn. My NC would be a killer if the hood wasn’t at knee height.
What study? Why the F is the study at the end of the headline after a comma? Where are the data points about the view from the pedestrians and how they deal with all of that “square motor vehicle” nonsense? Can anybody provide the information about the relative numbers of “boxy SUVs and Pickup trucks” vs any other 4 wheel mode of transport that seems intent on killing innocent civilians?
Nope… didn’t think so this is just CNN trolling.
And the sky is blue. What else is new?
…The Cybertruck?
Oh wait, that’s not better…
we should wait and see what crash test results it gets. Current Tesla models are some of the best in terms of crash test results.
It’s 2023 and we’re still blaming the vehicle design and not the total lack of pedestrian impact regulations on US market cars.
Exactly this. Well said.
If only we could get people to PUT DOWN THEIR PHONES AND LOOK WHERE THEY ARE GOING !
It’s 2023 and we’re still blaming the vehicle design and not the total lack of pedestrian impact regulations on US market cars.
Is this a joke or just wild irony?
Not a joke, most of the pedestrian safety innovation are from euro cars where there’s regulation apparently
Wait, in your eyes a front-facing camera isn’t the solution to people running over children? You want to gasp MAKE THE TRUCKS NOT STUPID?! How dare you?
??
That’s not what the article is about.
Gasp! Perhaps we should make vehicles that people can actually SEE OUT OF
If we had pedestrian impact regulations vehicles would not be designed the way they are right now.
And the fact that nobody (drivers and pedestrians) will bother to look up from their screens for literally anything
That’s probably a big factor. There are a couple others that reddit isn’t ready to handle but it is in one of the linked articles.
It really has little to do with front end design (which is a stupid theory on its face).
Go look at pedestrian deaths by year and try and guess the year the Iphone released. Here’s a hint, its the year before rates started to increase after they had been steadily decreasing for 30 years.
Truck market share hasn’t increase that much, nor have trucks actually gotten any bigger. Also the SUV craze had already been in full swing since the early 2000s as their market share only went up like 5% between 2000 & 2013.
I don’t doubt for a second SUVs & Trucks are more dangerous in pedestrian collisions, they’re bigger vehicles it’s a given. But the increase in pedestrian fatalities is 95% driven by smart phone related distracted driving.
this is the thing that really gets my goat, aside from we car enthusiasts, does anyone actually enjoy driving? (as an enthusiast, I don’t enjoy 99% of the driving I do) from what I can tell it’s just a distraction from trolling your ex’s IG while you’re sitting at a (green) light.
we pay such a price to implement this system of “cars as personal transport” and then we tied it to the mast of USS American Freedom and now the ship is sinking and we’re underwater on the note…
Those are not exactly equal though.
Let’s look at it another way. If someone wants more than five seats, their choice is either a large crossover/SUV or some sort of van.
Given the general front end profile of a passenger van, is it actually any better for a pedestrian to be hit by something like a Toyota Alphard or a Lexus LM?
Australian UTEs are like Ferraris here!
Nobody believes me when I say G-Wagen’s are usually driven by mafia. /s
Won’t catch me hitting anyone in my boxy Jeep XJ. While everyone else is going 60 in a 45 I’m barely leaving the light hitting 25.
I saw a sticker on a Wrangler the other day that said “Go around, if it could go any faster it wouldn’t be shaped like a fucking brick”
It’s not often I chuckle at window stickers
Surprisingly, by drowning.
Did anyone else read the article?
And I can’t have my goddamn pop up headlights while Derek is out here in a truck that can’t see the ground 20 feet in front of it splattering children smh
And I can’t have my goddamn pop up headlights
you can, they’re legal in the US. They became unnecessary after US relaxed its regulations on headlights. US had a ban on aerodynamic headlights, so that’s why we had pop-ups.
I had pop up headlights in my firebird and I do not miss them at all
They’re something weirdly loved by people who never had to maintain them.
FWIU pop-ups weren’t regulated out of existence, at least in America. They just fell out of fashion and any proposal to re-implement them gets nixed at the corporate level on grounds of cost and complexity.
I’m sure MPG estimates would be a shit show as well.
Why? Measure it when they are closed. That is like, 90% of driving.
It’s a major impact and there are billions of miles traveled at night
Just proves my belief that people who drive these huge trucks for non-work purposes (and put grille guards for that extra “guarantee” of pedestrian death) are complete, maniacal psychopaths.
My company makes me drive a full size truck. I was stopped on a slight incline pulling into the coffee shop and I literally could not see a whole ass car that was in front of me, I just had to know he was there and wait until he moved far enough forward I could see him. The blind spots are ridiculous.
Yep. Mauled my neighbor’s 60 gallon trash can one morning. Couldn’t see it in front of my hood.
I love that damn, trashy vehicle. But, I can understand the logic surrounding tighter safety regs.
