Now you know why gasoline is sold by the liter in Europe: you can multiply the price another 3.5x.
$10 / gal is quite typical in Europe.
Welcome to the reality of fossil fuel scarcity and the consequences of stupid wars. It’s high time Americans felt what happens when they do stupid shit in a world of dwindling cheap energy resources.
Amusingly it’s a different gallon in the UK, while it’s mostly obsolete it’s the volume of ten pounds of water or about 4.5 litres.
Fuel has been sold by the litre for many years, but it was deemed too expensive to send someone round changing all the road signs to km/h and kilometres. Fair enough in my view but we then made the absolutely daft decision to keep measure fuel efficiency in miles to the gallon, not miles to the litre or even litres / 100 miles. Confusing to Britons who don’t use gallons for anything else, confusing to other Europeans who’ve been entirely metric for generations, and confusing to Americans who use a different gallon.
This will be the tipping point that causes the US to switch to metric.
It isnt, most european countries usually have much lower prices. Even with the current situation the median is arround 8usd/gallon.
You must live where it’s cheaper. I gassed up this morning in Scandinavia and it was over 2.4€ per liter for diesel.
I just saw €2,56 diesel on my way home today. (For the americans, that’d be around $11,2 per us gallon.
Which is only 8.4€ per galloun.
Where is it $10 per galloun in Europe?
Your math is off though.
€2.40 per Liter is actually €9.08 per gallon, which would be $10.47 per gallon US.
There’s 3.785L to a gallon. 2.40x3.785 is 9.08.
In France I’m seeing 2.1€ per liter of 95-E10
Which is why I, as a Norwegian, have never looked back after switching to a BEV
Well, it’s not really an option for me: I don’t drive nearly enough in a year for the expense to make financial sense, and I don’t want a modern car with all the surveillance equipment built in. I fill up maybe 3 or 4 times a year, but that doesn’t mean I don’t feel the pain when I do 🙂

As a comparison: The cheapest diesel available in Finland right now on September the 14th is 2.222 € per litre. That translates to 9.71 USD per gallon. The most expensive available today is 2.611 €/l, translating to 11.41 $/gallon
So you telling me the US will start using metric because it’ll be cheaper than replacing/upgrading every pump to display another digit…
I remember when they started selling gasoline by the 1/2 gallon - because the price went over $1.00/gal and the pumps didn’t have a dollar position to program into them. I said then they should go up to at least two dollar digits per gallon, but no one listened to me - just like today.
Gosh I must be old.
Is it just the big signs that can’t understand $10+ print (fixed with some cardboard), or are the pump programming incapable of calculating higher price? Y2k 2.0
I did and 5 years ago, I purchased an EV as a precaution.
If anyone is counting on the O&G crew to give you a break, I’ve got an orphan well to sell you.
Don’t worry, they’ll fix the machines soon, and they will be able to go above 10. All is well.
Print out 1s to stick next to the sign display
I remember this happening:

Genius! Promotion! Hire this legend!
(meant in a totally positive way btw, not a being a dick way)
Or maybe they will finally use the international system of measurements. Nah, they will fix the machines.
Well, it’s just starting. We didn’t see it earlier because it was the weekend.
Well, it’s just starting.
Costco is now rationing motor oil. And US crops will have no fertilizer this spring. Good thing you guys are winning the war!
LOOK WHAT YOU MADE US DO! Now we have to buy displays with more digits? That’s going to mean higher gas prices for you. You just don’t learn, do you?
Change from gallons to liters and the sky is the limit!
Would be funny if this was what finally got us to switch to metric. Could happen, too, when combined with shrinkflation generally. Because nothing pushes social change like business profits.
This is because DEMOCRATS!
-Republican Voters UNIRONICALLY!
Someone online posted that the reason things are all expensive, is the Rs are trying to fix all the problems caused by Democrats.
I can’t understand the mental gymnastics needed to come up with, and believe that statement.
I think it goes beyond mental gymnastics into mental contortionism.
Tell them to name one problem, and show their work that Dems caused it, Repubs are trying to fix it, and how that caused diesel prices to spike.
Spoiler, they can’t.
“I was told there would not be fact checking”
Racism brings out the creative side in people, who would’a thunk it?
Wouldnt want an unstable woman in charge of things now, would we?
/s for those with glacial mental faculties
Instead we have a demented queen.
The difference in gas prices between California and red states is still bigger than the difference between before and after Trump attacked Iran.
California has a history of importing fuel from Asia. Difficulty related to crossing the rockies on trucking. Though I’m surprised there isn’t a rail option. Prices are much higher in Asia.
Its up about the same percentage as Texas.
Texas $3.23 pre war, $5.81 current. California $4.66 pre war, $8.14 current.
Would like to see proof of that.
I had a Car Crisis back in '04 and the only car on the market I could afford was a beat up 86 Suburban that couldn’t have gotten more than 12mpg.
I think gas was hovering around $2.50 a gallon at that time and shit was dire, I can only imagine how rough it is for the poor souls nowadays that Need A Truck.
I rented minivans to move my kids into their dorms, and they had outstanding mileage. That was my “truck” requirement
The thing is, it seems like there are two primary groups of diesel truck owners. One, actually does truck stuff, they tow, they haul, they use it for work.
The others just really wish they were blue collar and so wants to be like the first group. They include a very diverse group of people who are insecure guys that don’t actually do anything terribly useful. They bought the truck but it only goes to an office, a costco, a school pickup line; their poorer brethren are similar, but just go to places like walmart, their ex-wife’s house, and a gas station (to buy cigarettes and put $10 of fuel in).
I feel bad for the people who actually need to use those things. For the goobers who want to cosplay as a laborer, I could not be happier.
You just explained my MAGA coworker. GMC 3500 super duty diesel and it’s always super clean, and he mainly uses it for going to the office. Any chance he gets to use his newly purchased trailer, he will, even if it would fit in the bed. He’s really lame.
Plenty of folks are actually blue collar but don’t need it. You see a lot of trucks in factory parking lots
They’ll append the sign with a tiny 9/10ths of $10 sticker and roll the display back over to $ 1.10. (Forgive me if my math is off, I’m a dreamer, not a do-er)
Or… Just stick a 1 in front of the number?
Or start selling by the
literquart.
I worked in a gas station in Canada back in 2001 when the price of a liter first broke $1.00. We had to physically stick a 1 up on the electronic sign.
Oh shit yeah I remember that as a kid. What was the hike caused by? 9/11?
Dad was complaining about California having high gas prices and not criticizing the policies that have led to this or the person he voted for causing this
California has higher than average gas prices for a myriad of complications reasons, not the least of which being a largely independent Petro industry.
It’s inevitable. Obviously this is caused by a political disruption, but oil is a finite resource. People are eventually going to be economically forced to switch to electric, and putting it off for ethnocentrism reasons is just poor policy.
One COVID like event could collapse demand in a matter of weeks, like it did last time and gas dropped to 1.85 a gallon where I live. No one was going anywhere. Air quality improved, and really nothing changed. Same self hating dipshit pedo/closet gay/rape ape president.
Almost like he’s setup his whole 1st term to benefit the middle east oil subsidies his family has invested in. Like how the Liv golf foundation was just a way to funnel money to right wing Assholes
That’s not that fair to say.
He’s also set up his second term to enrich himself and his inner circle at our expense, too!
Ha! You fool! You think there’s infinite electrons to put in your dastardly e-buckets???!!!?
Imagine running out of electrons, having to walk miles to the nearest facility to fill up your bucket, then walk all the way back with electrons sloshing out all over the place
This is the future liberals want!
Please can you spare an ion?
Do you think energy for your car just falls from the sky?
