Windows XP
When Windows XP first released, people criticized it for having a theme that they hadn’t seen before in Windows. People thought it was very kiddish and appealing to children, not being taken as seriously for the large userbase of the time. There were also criticisms about how fragile Internet Explorer was (I’m not kidding, I was there and Internet Explorer back then was at its most insufferable.).
But these days, just because of how bad Windows 8, 8.1, 10 and now 11 have been, people have praised Windows XP so much.
Windows XP wasn’t good until SP2 or 3, and then it was only better for gaming IMO.
Windows 2000 was super solid and what I used for work. But XP was better for games at the time.
XP was also “free” for a lot of people thanks to a certain volume license key.

I think people have just forgotten. XP was so nasty, I stuck with Windows 2000 for my machines that had to run Windows until after support ended and new things stopped working - leapfrogging over both XP and Vista, straight to Windows 7.
Mine was a jump from 95 to XP, then 7.

Yeah, in my house growing up we had Win 3.11, then 95, then Me.
Windows Me was so bad my dad ragequit and switched the family PC to SuSE Linux and never looked back. And, to be clear, Linux back in the early 00s was often not a pleasant experience, but it was better than Me.
I eventually built my own gaming PC and ran Windows on that, but even then it was a pirated copy of 2000. I only ever encountered XP at school.
I was too young to understand the OS but I remember it kept crashing and getting in trouble like it was my fault.
Similar, but 95 already moved to second partition in 98 or so already.
7 was my last one privately.
Still stuck with W11 at work, but for a large part just use at it as a starting platform for WSL and Virtual Box.
Windows XP crashed so much within the 3 days I had it set up that I permanently moved to Slackware and got rid of that partition
I actually asked my dad (and he did) to take me to the Windows XP Tablet PC Edition launch event in LA for my 14th birthday.
I got one of those when I was in college and it was perfect for that. A little underpowered but great for writing, notes, etc.
Action and resistance.
We were told standing up was extreme. I’m all for a peace and love mantra but we have been conditionally pacified. Trouble is back in the streets and it’s not being met.
Part of me is baffled and a bit weirded out that we’ll have stories like Injustice, where a kryptonian god rules the world but Batman is STILL insisting on his “Do not kill” rule.
I want to see more heroes that will string up a purse snatcher and give them a stern talking to, but will also end the lives of truly evil people.
The LED lighting transition
Not sure about that one.
Did cut my elecricity bill by 20% or so while still managing to finally adequately illuminate my home.While not perfect color-wise and kinda expensive at the beginning, LED’s still were much better than the coventional energy saving bulbs, which l omitted because they got me headaches.
I remember our hydro company in my small Ontario, Canada town sending out free LED bulbs to people if they made under a certain amount. We were able to replace nearly all the lights in our house
There seems to be an interesting rhythm to perceptions. Things are what they are in the now, then the good gets realised as bad and vice versa with the benefit of hindsight. Then the past gets far enough away that hindsight dims and people switch to their nostalgia goggles.

Nostalgia is a hell of a drug. But its one we need to get past, its not getting us anywhere. We are not powerless and we are not weak. Our youth can have a better future.
Preaching to the choir, there. Nostalgia started out as a mental illness and needs to go back to that status.
I don’t think 2020 will be looked at fondly no matter how far out. Unless you’re introverted.
I cry for Windows 8. It was completely half baked, but, I loved the change. I think that’s why I’m also a huge fan of Gnome.
8.1 was the last best windows
The Star Wars prequel trilogy.
There was a looooot of vitriol, especially for Ep. I. And with each release it always seem to get louder, and frankly a lot of it was toxic and inexcusable.
Nowadays I see a lot of nostalgia around them, especially from Millennials who grew up on these three films, much like the GenX kids grew up on IV, V and VI. And a lot more kindness towards the actors too, especially Hayden.
XP sp1 and 2 were pretty hot garbage. Sp3 though? 🤌
Compared with ME though? I remember the first couple times I used ME it crashed. XP was at least always based on the NT Kernel and therefore had some basic stability.

You know I miss Vista a bit. It wasn’t perfect, but it was pretty decent, was a slightly undercooked version of 7. I’d happily take it’s ux over 11 any day.
Windows XP also had the problem that when it launched, a lot of people’s computers weren’t really up to running XP it very well. Windows XP will run on a Pentium III with 256 MB of ram, but it wasn’t particularly happy about it. A few years later when people when people were running XP on a Core 2 Duo with 2GB of ram, it was a much smoother experience.
A long time ago, Steam was hated on its release. People just wanted to play Counterstrike and Half-Life 2, and this studio with like three games wanted you to install a launcher and taskbar app for it, and make an online account to play a singleplayer game.
Well, different than today you could just select classic style somewhere and it looked like the improved cross between W95 and NT, while today I’m stuck with the abysmal W11 interface.
I can’t say much about the browser though, as I am old netscape gang that soon increasingly switched to Phoenix (that’s what later became Firefox).
Basically wasn’t that much of an issue if you knew your way around.XP crashed more often than newer Releases, though (but still much less than W95).
