  • A lot of it is just “flail wildly and hope nobody stops you”

Bush v Gore was won when a bunch of campaign flaks simply stormed an office on Miami-Dade and intimidated the staff into halting the recount.

Like, that wasn’t a good plan on it’s face. And it failed to win in state court. And it didn’t even halt recounts statewide. But it did get the case up to a stacked court, where a majority of Republican SC judges could simply annoint Bush the winner.

Similarly, Ohio in 2004 was decided thanks to a rigged recount process. But because the case dragged out into 2007… what was anyone going to do about it? Bush wasn’t going to stop being president halfway through his second term.

As often as not, these elections turn on what people can get away with. They aren’t decided by genius plots by brilliant strategists so much as shameless acts of political vandalism that go uncontested.

  • I agree that support is needed, but I can’t take this argument seriously.

The way I see it, someone at city hall went out of pocket several hundred dollars to customize those benches. And then they’re paying someone to come out every morning and unlock them (or not and just leaving benches locked indefinitely). All so life is now harder for people already sleeping rough.

Does anyone really believe the city councilor or mayor or whomever who went through that trouble is going to be releasing money to improve municipal services for homeless residents? I certainly don’t.

  • It would be the only concrete proof for them that their religion isn’t a lie.

Evangelicals have an entire grab-bag of faith healing and “I saw Angels in my oatmeal” testimonials and apocryphal accounts of magic golden tablets that you can only read inside a man’s hat. FFS, there’s an entire Ark Adventure exhibit in Kentucky. Nevermind the crushing volume of religious artifacts and icons and reliquaries scattered all through Europe, North Africa, and the Middle East. No shortage of things religious people can point to as “proof” enough to satisfy themselves.

Modern Millenarianism isn’t just proof, it’s vindication. It’s a final triumphant Fuck You to the heretics, as you’re wisked off into the box seats at the right hand of the Correct Kind Of Jesus to point and laugh at all the infidels who didn’t do the correct religion correctly.

If I was Israeli I don’t think I’d be comfortable with the “support” I get from Evangelical Christians.

Zionists have their own spin on things, wherein they’re proven right and all the goys get humiliated. In their version, the Israelis rule humanity for a thousand years from a Utopian Kingdom occupied by the Correct Jews. And then God showers them with blessings so long as they do the correct number of animal sacrifices on the correctly sanctified big stone table in the correct big stone building using the correct magic words.

Everyone’s thinking they’ve got the magic beans and the other person is being stuck with the dried up milk cow. That’s what keeps the engine turning.

  • Putin won’t negotiate.

Every war is a prelude to diplomacy.

Putin is a dead man if the Ukraine war ends

This is a mythology the media has invented to keep people titillated with the news.

You’re looking for a storybook ending with a mortality tale. The bitter truth is that Putin’s as cemented in place as any Russian politician has ever been.

This perpetual conflict is entirely ego-driven, with Ukraine caught in the middle of a tug of war. Putin won’t quit because he’s old and stubborn. The EU leadership won’t quit because they need this war as an excuse to rearm, after decades of US occupation.

If the economy contracts hard enough, we’ll see a negotiation. Until then, it seems that everyone in power is playing with house money. So the conflict can drag on indefinitely, because it’s more fun to play at war than manage a peaceful continent in decline.
