  • Almost half of the starters are injured yet we’re joint top having beat City, and well on our way to topping our CL group. Do people really think if we had the injuries that we currently have at the beginning of last year we would have had the same start?

The way that we play and signings that we made over the summer are designed to grind out results over a long season with with versatile players who can fill in at multiple positions. We are trying to avoid a repeat of what happened last year where 2-3 injuries completely derailed us.

  • Against City he played in a double pivot, Jorginho was asked to cover less ground and more just be in the right position to cover passing lanes and slowly progress the ball out against a mid block.

Yesterday, he played way further up the pitch as a L8 for most of the game, and Jorginho was asked to be a lone 6 against essentially 3 box-to-box players in Gallagher, Enzo, and Caicedo and a high press.

At this point I don’t think Jorginho can play that lone 6 role against more athletic midfields. I rarely criticize Arteta but I think he got the midfield tactics wrong yesterday. We looked much better when Havertz came on and Rice shifted to the 6.

  • If teams are going to play a high press against us, I’m kind of wondering if it’s even worth to pass the ball out of the back if we move the ball up the pitch so slowly and our keepers look so shaky.

It seems like it makes more sense to just start Havertz at the 8 and have him win long balls from Raya and have Rice gobble up all of the loose balls. That will also free up Odegaard from having to drop deep to move the ball up to pitch. Kind of like what City did to us at the Etihad last year.
