Don’t take it off or put it on over a tile floor. Tile floors are notorious for busting AWs, including even Ultras. Get AppleCare. For a few dollars a month you’ll only curse and rant about your busted watch, vs curse and rant and need to buy a new watch to replace it. These are relatively tough, but can still be broken. It also extends the basic warranty, so if it fails without your intervention, it gets fixed for free.

  • No, it’s not linear. Some people can get a full day of use with a battery health of 77%, others complain of charging twice a day at 84%. What matters is whether your use pattern changes. When it does, it’s worth looking at the battery health. Some people stay at 83% for 6 months or more, just to annoy you at not ready for replacement yet despite barely getting through 6 hours. If it’s below 80% (79% or lower) you can get a battery replacement in the US for $99 (used to be $79, but like many things, Apple jacked up the price). You can then decide if you want your dump $99 on a fresh battery or towards a new watch.

Just to help us out here. You had an iPhone. You got an Ultra. You broke your iPhone (guessing you didn’t have AppleCare) and replaced it with an Android.

Or, you busted your iPhone, and while you were at the cellular company’s store, replaced it with an Android, then got the Ultra because they had a great promotion going on.

As an aside, you probably don’t have a dog, do you?

  • You can go the screen protector route, but understand it is still not water or dust resistant, and that crack will worsen over time. In addition, the sapphire glass used on the SS series watches is quite scratch resistant, but is more brittle than the plain glass on the aluminum models. It’s quite possible it will fail before any AWX reaches the market (and who knows what features it might bring).

You can baby it along for as long as possible, but be prepared for a decision of “I now have x months before a new model is out. Will I go that long without a watch?” If the answer is no, I need a dependable watch, just replace it. You have at least 10 months before you’ll be able to consider a new model on your wrist. The S9 is an excellent watch (as is the S8 if you can find it in the model and color you want, especially with Black Friday sales less than two weeks away). You’re coming up on a good time to find a good deal, and if it were me, I’d be buying now, not hoping I make it almost a year to the next model.
