Used to think player confidence was overrated till I watched Havertz play. Have never seen a player more afraid of making a play and saying “ok I’m taking this shot idc if it misses and you’re not happy” instead he passes to others because he’s afraid

After finally watching that VAR review for the Newcastle game there are a few things that are clear to me (in isolation, from many inconsistent decisions by VAR).

    1. Kai Havertz should of been sent off for that tackle.
    2. Bruno Guimares should have been sent off for that hit on Jorginho
    3. On the goal
      1. The ball was not 100% out. It was the right call.
      2. Gabriel is attempting to flick the ball, making a calculate decision that requires precision, and is leaning forward. Even if Joelinton doesn’t push him that hard, he is still pushing him enough to gain advantage on that play. Call for referee to review and see if they saw that and allow them to make the call.
      3. Gordon was off side by anywhere the ball would of been if the ball was seen. Should’ve been offsides.

Either way it happened, we press forward, and it’s time to move on. I’m glad Arteta didn’t stay quiet and that Arsenal backed him. Looking forward to see how this turns out.

Also, I don’t fucking understand the handball at this time. Newcastle is clearly benefitting for the ball hitting Joelinton’s hand.

Damn, I thought I moved on but I’m still fucking pissed. Fuck this bullshit. COYG.

I agree with all the points besides the offside. In that instance, Gordon needs to be behind the ball. If you look at standing legs and infer from there, he looks on, but besides my speculation, the call that it was not a clear and obvious error is right imo.

Havertz shouldn’t have been sent off, that’s just silly. It was a bit of a soft yellow, mostly those are just given as free kicks with no card.

On the goal, it was obviously never out of play. I really despair of people who don’t understand what shape a sphere is. A football is 22cm in diameter. 11cm radius. Some of it sits down into the grass, but you can still see at least 5 or 6 cm of grass at the base when the outermost point is level with the edge of the line.

well done for bringing Ramsdale’s dad onto your pod, and well done for gaining you clicks.

A guy in the office who i speak to regularly about Arsenal says he heard that the Odegaard concussion story may be a bit of a cover up for the fact that Arteta and Odegaard have had a falling out recently.

I did call BS on this but wondered if anyone else has heard similar?

Heard they had a fight in the canteen and they both got covered in gravy, Arteta cheap shorted Ødegaard by hairbutting him, this enraged Ødegaard who was about to use his finishing move and suplex Arteta through a table but then Win’s distressed barking caused everyone to calm down.

Hope the squad can get through this!

How good do you make Ramsdale to be?

In my opinion he is a good keeper for a team in the 4th-8th range. His traditional goalkeeping is average for the league, and his distribution is good, but not so good that it makes up for it at the title challengng level.

He would be improve the level of Newcastle and Villa. Whilst there may be a fall off in aspects like shot stopping, I think he is good enough with his feet to take those teams up a level regardless.

When we signed Ramsdale, my immediate impression was that he was an improvement on Leno, broadly speaking, but perhaps not enough of an improvement: that is, much as Leno was believed, when we signed him, to be an improvement on Cech, especially with respect to distribution, but not enough.

Arteta and Inaki surely believed they could improve him, and get him into that Ederson/Alisson tier; I don’t think anyone would agree they’ve yet succeeded. The question was always whether they felt his potential and his progress relative to that potential justified continuing that process. (This of course ignores the first class arr slash Gunners lunatic conspiracy theory that Inaki is deliberately sabotaging Ramsdale and all our other keepers to ‘get his guy’ Raya in.)

Looking at where he is now, in relation to other clubs (but irrespective of their current keeper situations) it’s probably a question of level and stylistic fit. Ramsdale could be a very good fit for clubs like Burnley or Bournemouth, but I don’t know that his shot stopping or command is good enough to help them do more than stay afloat. At Brighton or (amusingly) Brentford, in the midtable, he’d be a good fit and a lot less exposed.

You’re probably right that he’d improve Howe’s Saudcastle; I wonder about Unai’s Villa though. I suspect he’d have a disastrous time at Tottenham and Trafford.

In a curious way, I think we’ve been both a very good fit for him, and possibly not the best fit as a place to grow. He has improved, but, ot my mind, plateaued; that can happen when a player who needs to grow gets stuck trying to perform, week in and week out. I tend to take Arteta at face value when he said he wanted to keep both: that he believed playing less might, if Ramsdale was mentally equal to that challenge, have allowed him to push through with his development, and given him a real partner to push against in Raya. Possibly that is happening behind the scenes, but his dad would seem to be suggesting, at the very least, that there’s friction of a less than ideal sort.

The number of saves Emi,Pope,Leno and Pickford make is insane

Midtable/Relegation is a different ball game so i don’t think he improve them

Ramsdale needs attacking football to thrive

Not sure i agree with that. His most memorable games for me are against Liverpool and Spurs last season. I don’t think he is that good of a shot stopper but increased volume could help his focus.

Seems on the same level as Pope and Martinez.Doubt he improves them. Better than Sanchez, but Chelsea would probably try for someone better. Doesn’t leave many options for him.

How many clubs, that could probably want him, can afford his present wages and a transfer fee? Possibly Bayern. But I doubt they would want Arsenal’s 2nd choice GK to replace one of their greatest goalkeepers. I can count only 1 or 2 English clubs who could want him and can afford his wages.Ramsdale’s options are very limited, unless he is willing to take a huge paycut.

You’re probably right about Emi. But with the ball at his feet he is in a different level to Pope, particularly in short distribution where Pope is extremely nervy. If Newcastle want to transition to a game plan where they try to control all 90 minutes they will need a better ball playing keeper.

The VAR explanation for the Hwang Hee Chan penalty against Schär is making the Havertz’s penalty review against Man U look like a farce of subjective decisionmaking.

One uses ‘minimal contact’ to justify and defend the ref’s on-field call, and one uses it to overturn.

No standards have been set. No benchmark has been made to work from. No clear and obvious bar to clear. Completely subjective interpretations. And guess who got which one?

The debate about that Hwang one is bizarre. Couldn’t be any more obviously a penalty. But what’s crazy is that no-one is talking about VAR discussing possible contact etc, rather than saying ‘textbook case of jumping in, clear penalty’ or whatever. They just don’t know the rules.
