H everyone, I’m currently running in to an issue with my home network, I have my own home setup using the modem from my ISP. I have a TP link non WiFi router attached to the modem using dynamic IP. From my router I have a Netgear unmanaged switch and in the switch is all my connections from my patch panel. I have my home pc, Plex server and wireless routers used as access points for WiFi connections, one upstairs and one downstairs. I have all this in my office closet. I’m able to get gigabit speed from the modem, but from the router, I’m getting slower speeds to everything else. So I’ve been researching other non WiFi routers and found the Ubiquiti EdgeRouter 4. Will I be able to integrate this router in to my setup and get the correct speeds I’m supposed to be getting? Also, how would I set this up for my setup to get good speeds for Ethernet and WiFi connections?
I wouldn’t get anything from EdgeRouter line. The hardware is pretty anemic by modern standards and they’re pretty much EOL(despite Ubiquiti claiming they’re not.)
Where on the scale of “just works” to “I want to tinker” are you looking for?
The Edgerouter 4 will definitely do a full 1 Gbps between two ports with NAT on. The ER4 (unlike some other Edgerouters) has also been rock-solid reliable for me; I have two that have been in use for I think 7 years without a failure. Of course that “7 years” is also kind of an issue because they are a 7 year old design that is still near the top of that line, and I understand there is unlikely to ever be a new Edgerouter model. If your Internet connection ever exceeds 1 Gbps there is no replacement that can use that (well, there’s the Edgerouter Infinity but that’s silly) but if that’s not an issue for you the ER4 is really very good.
So the ER4 will deliver 1 Gbps to or from anything ultimately attached to your switch that chooses to send or receive that fast, which is.about all a wired router can do for you. This is in fact why I like wired routers and the way you’ve built your network; not ever issue points at the same piece of equipment.
Would I have to set it up something special on the ER4 or just set it up and then plug my switch into the router?
If you want to stay with TP-Link, you could try their newer ER707-M2 router, which sports 2 x 2.5gb ports, and 4 x 1Gb ports.
It is well over triple the performance of your current router, at an attractive price.
It would definitely be an improvement for wired speeds.
As for an improvement to WiFi speeds – it’s hard to say. That would be predicated on the access points themselves, and less on your router.
To answer your question though - an EdgeRouter4 would be more than capable of making the most of your ISP’s speed.
How would I configure the Edge router 4 to be able to plug it in to my switch? Should I use dynamic IP or something else? I just want to make sure I’m getting all the internet speed I can to my switch.
And if I set up QoS for gaming, will that affect my other devices plugged in to my switch?
