Am I going crazy of has the amount of anti-EV “articles” started to skyrocket. Just today, I’ve seen a “Why I’m not buying an EV” concern article, some accusing Biden of killing EVs, “The true costs of buying an EV,” and my favorite: “Study: The True Cost of Charging an EV: $17/gallon.” (That study was funded by Exxon Mobil, lol).
What’s going on? Why is all the EV hate in the media ramping up?

I’m sure politics have a lot to do with it as well. Especially with an election year coming up next year.

People are scared by new technologies and when they have to change. So the media creates clicks with these articles to confirm the bias of their readers.

Did you click on the article? Yes? Goal achieved.

Peter Zeihan posted a video last week that was like 80% misinformation about EVs. I lost all respect for him. Apparently he’s in the pocket of big oil.

Just the usual oil/legacy auto delaying tactic, the more of it you see the closer to the end of the ice car is near so it’s a good thing.

It’s like Brexit, it’s mainly the same people as well… My dad and uncle are dead against EVs mainly because they read newspapers which are full of shit. I mentioned I was looking at an EV for my next car and my uncle started going on about how he would never have one. My barber says they’re a fire risk, and some guy he knows who works for the AA says he’s “picked up for every month of the year that’s set on fire” which I find hard to believe, but even if he’s not talking shite it’s still only 12…

It’s called “lobbying” and it’s what petrochemical companies do. They dont want you being able to fuel up at home from a plug in the wall. They have billions tied up in distribution and retail outlets, as well as refineries.

These companies have a vest interest in persuading the lowest common denominator that EV’s are the devils work. That is why any Fox/Sky/Murdoch paper/mouthpiece will report “EV sales are falling, no one wants EV’s. The dangers of buying an EV…” etc etc, while the real world figures show EV adoption at 1000% over the last few years.

The reason it is ramping up because 2 or 3 years ago, EV’s were niche and not many companies made them and they were a bit of an exclusive thing… Petrol companies are now just coming to the realisation that EV’s are coming thick and fast and people want them, so they are doubling their efforts to stem the tide of change…

It happens every time there is a massive consumer shift, companies are slow to react and want to cling to the old ways. So, instead of moving with the times, they try and convince people that the old technology is better, cheaper, faster, cleaner, etc… when it isn’t, they just dont want to change.

This has ramped up now because legacy auto had essentially given up on trying to make EVs profitable and so are fighting hard to overturn the EV ban. It’s the same in the UK, everyone is talking about there being no ev demand because Tesla missed a quarter even though they said 4 months in advance factory shutdowns would cause this but msm are twisting the facts as hard as possible

The amount of EQS and EQE SUVs I see goes up by the day. If the mercedes faithful are giving up on ICE cars - I think ICE is done. Mercedes drivers are the most conservative drivers there are.

Sure, prices could come down, but it isn’t an issue for anyone who can actually afford a new car. If a new civic starts at 25K - I don’t think EVs have to be any cheaper. For 25K you can get a new Bolt, much nicer car than a civic.

It’s all FUD for the Trump team. Most of the articles I see are from the Wall Street Journal and Fox. Follow the money to see who stands to gain from these stories.

Yeah, it seems kind of cyclical. Give it a few months and the media will be all sunshine and roses for EVs again. And a few months after that, “EVs kill baby seals!”

The media capitalizing on fear caused by societal change? This must be the first time this has ever happened in the history of the world.

Oh wow, that study is amazing.

First, the wikipedia page for the “Texas Public Policy Foundation” states (above and beyond them being funded by Chevron and ExxonMobil as you point out):

Fueling Freedom, which seeks to “explain the forgotten moral case for fossil fuels” by rejecting the scientific consensus on climate change.

Moral case? For fossil fuels?? I just can’t even wrap my head around that one. Digging up oil is more “moral” than me throwing solar panels up on my roof and collecting energy from the sun?

In any case … yeah some real whoppers …

"EV advocates claim that the cost of electricity for EV owners is equal to $1.21 per gallon of gasoline (Edison Electric Institute, 2021), but the cost of charging equipment and charging losses, averaged out over 10 years and 120,000 miles, is $1.38 per gallon equivalent on top of that.

Somehow they hand-wave from $1.21/gallon to a whopping $17 a gallon … because of “charging equipment” and other things? I mean, gas stations don’t build themselves for free so they can’t be talking about public EV charging / supercharger stations right? And home charging? My wall charger was like $500 for the unit, and $500 for a licensed electrician to install. 1.2c per mile driven for us so far.

I wonder if this is one of those ones where they say home charging stations are $10k to have installed in your home (there was some ridiculous right-wing comic floating around sometime in the last year or so that depicted that).

Because this is the first REAL shift to a non fossil fuel vehicle. We’re seeing adoption rates going from .5% - 1% - 4% — 8% etc… it’s catching on, and companies are trying to use scare tactics to keep you addicted to the crack… sry, gasoline.
