Just watched a Granit Xhaka highlights video from last season.
He really was outstanding, one of the best box-to-box seasons you’ll see, but one of the things that stands out to me is his linkup and understanding with everyone on that left hand side. So many one time passes for Zinchenko, Martinelli, Trossard, Jesus, even Odegaard.
I really hope Havertz can up his game a bit going forward. You’d very rarely say Xhaka was a periphery figure in a match, always high up there in touch and pass counts, really want to see Havertz get more involved from CM.
I do think missing him is a big reason why we’re not creating as much, nobody in the squad right now does what he did last season (outside of Rice, but he’s much better as the 6!)
We are missing ball progression but he wasn’t doing a lot of that last season. He was however, the one person who consistently did it right all through that dark era. Banter era Xhaka with Rice and Odegaard, and maybe a good front three would eat.
Now watch us spend millions trying to get that one thing he did right, hoping that one guy is actually as available as Xhaka was.
