Shasta county, hotbed of US election denialism movement, set to appoint ex-Colorado clerk who served prison term

A northern California county that has become a hotbed of activism for those who sow doubts about the reliability of voting machines plans to hire Tina Peters, the prominent Colorado election denier recently released from prison, to work on elections.

Clint Curtis, the top election official in Shasta county, told the Guardian he plans to hire Peters as a consultant to replace Brent Turner, his top deputy, who has been on medical leave. He said Peters would not have access to the county’s voting system and did not directly respond when asked what her responsibilities would be. Plans to hire Peters, who is still on parole and must receive permission to travel outside of Colorado, were first reported by Action News Now.

Shasta county, a conservative region home to 182,000 people, has emerged as a center of the US election denialism movement in recent years. In 2023, the county’s governing body unsuccessfully sought to remake the voting process by cutting ties with the voting machine company Dominion Voting Systems and implementing a hand-count system that experts warned would be costly and far less accurate. The MyPillow CEO Mike Lindell, one of the leading promoters of falsehoods about election fraud in the US, said he would support the county’s effort. The state ultimately blocked Shasta’s plans. In addition, several candidates who lost their race for local office have embraced baseless conspiracy theories about election fraud and sued to overturn results.

Who is responsible for giving her permission to leave Colorado? Is it someone who might possibly deny that permission?

    How’s the measles outbreak going?

…oh not great? I’m shocked, your county seems so smart and good.

how… THE FUCK… can that be legal? How can you be appointed to a government position when you went to prison for abusing that exact position?

She isn’t a clerk this time and is not supposed to have access to the voting system. Still an insanely idiotic move though. The guy she is replacing seems to be a total moron too. Colorado should deny her permission to leave the state. Problem solved.

I guess having her sentence commuted was attractive to the hiring manager? I don’t know…nothing this past year has made sense…so this tracks. Unfucking believable.

The California equivalent of the old British rotten boroughs are the county governments in the mountainous meth zone in the north of the state and the Sierras. Hopefully the state will continue to slap down their performative bullshit before it causes actual harm.

I’m sure Newsome will write a very witty tweet about it. Then do nothing else, like always.

What a trash human, and a trash Governor for commuting her sentence. I hope that in her new role she tries some shit and has eyes on her. You’d have to be a complete idiot to get busted for this twice, and I think she’s prime choice.

I’m curious how this will turn out. Maybe she’ll gain access to things she shouldn’t be and force a recount. Maybe the county will vote more blue than expected.

The demographics of that county is most people live in the city, and most people are white and in their 40’s.
