It never should have been allowed to bundle unrelated legislation in bills.
The “voter ID” issue is a red herring. Voter ID is a relatively somewhat popular position among Americans.
But the SAVE Act goes way beyond that by requiring proof of citizenship on the ID. In the US that pretty much means a passport book or passport card would be required to vote.
Real ID driver licenses are not sufficient because they don’t say “US citizen” on the card. I know, because I have one in my pocket. Birth certificates are not photographic identification.
If this passes, we are going to find out that a whole bunch of red blooded, fair skinned, likely Republican voters, will have a hard time proving their citizenship with documentary evidence at the polls. Women who have changed their names through marriage are going to be in for an especially hard time.
But at the same time, generally well off people WILL be able to vote easily, and it’s pretty telling where the upper middle class throws their votes these days
Have you seen the ads this cycle? They are straight up lying with fabricated AI videos. They don’t need to prove that democrats voted against insider trading in congress.
Republican in Wsconsin, Tom Tiffany, has this stupid ad (I don’t even live in Wisconsin but very close to the border, just over the Mississippi) where he’s like, eating breakfast with his family and they’re all quick-firing the “big questions at him” like “what are you gonna do about healthcare?” to which he responds “make costs more transparent”… ok. That’s a start! It’s not enough, but Even Republicans are fed up with the super fucked medical industry. They aren’t trying to fool us with the stupid “oh you get he FREEDOM to CHOOSE which plan you want, just not a fucking free one, commie!” take, because it’s clear nobody believes that anymore.
Then they ask him, “what about fraud?!” To which he responds one simple word: “Audit”
fucking AUDIT WHO, TOM? THE WHOLE GOVERNMENT?! WHAT FRAUD FROM WHO??? You’re just gonna audit EVERYTHING?!
I was literally coming to the comments to say this. I really don’t understand how of all the shit the Republicans learned from the trump era they still don’t seem to have fully grasped that they can say literally whatever the fuck they want. Their base is stuck in a media ecosystem that will simply reinforce what the shitheads say.
There really needs to be some kind of reform against pork riders.
Also Congress in general.
Also representative democracy in general.
his own Republican Party
You shouldn’t be allowed to say it’s your own party when they boot you from office in the primary.
honestly I’ve seen relatively better rhetoric from the likes of massie or mtg than the “progressives” like sanders or aoc
Isn’t this one of the oldest tricks in the book though?
Will Democrats vote against it?

Juuuust not enough so that it passes.

Because the US is a one party state, except, with typical extravagance, they have two of them!
They’re not gonna vote for it dude.
I’ll be surprised if they don’t. It seems there’s always a few Dems that are willing to vote with Republicans to get their agenda passed.
They’ve already voted against it like 3 times.
When it was stand-alone legislation. This time they attached it as a rider to very popular legislation.
Sane people support voter id and that other shit

Rather why dont you tell me why America is the only civilized (and use that term lightly) nation that considers it suppression to prove ones identity before filling out a ballot to vote?
Just be sane and reasonable and you will forget this fake issue was ever a thing.

You already have to prove ID with your ID. Requiring that you get an additional voter ID, which of course you’ll have to pay for just puts an additional hurdle to exercise your constitutional right
Nope! When I vote I roll up to the polling place, wait in line, the volunteer asks my name, finds me on the list, and hands me my ballot. No ID needed, no picture on the list or anything, just “trust me bro.”
If I wanted to vote for my non-voting friends literally nothing could stop me, they’d have to review camera footage later
onceif a friend found out I voted for them, and yes then I’d go to jail, but you’d have to catch me.“Voter ID” in US debates typically just means “showing your state ID to vote,” not “getting a separate ID just for voting.” I’ve actually never heard anyone advocate for a secondary ID (I’m sure some exist, but it’s uncommon).
The issue is supposedly black people disproportionately “can’t get IDs easily.” Although that said, literally every black person I have ever met over the age of 18 has had one and they actively consider it racist for people to assume they can’t get one. And that’s not just “my black friend,” it’s a lot of people over a long time, I’m in a very mixed area.
But here’s the big kicker for me: if needing an ID to vote is racist because black people can’t get IDs, then needing an ID is racist full stop. If it’s about specifically needing an ID to use one’s “enumerated rights” specifically, and not say tobacco etc, that still means it’s racist to require ID for alcohol (21st amendment) and guns (2nd amendment).
Not that I’m “for” voter ID, I just disagree with it being “racist” like is often touted, I could much more easily see “transphobic” applying however depending on how it would handle name changes and the like.
Nope. The 24th amendment effectively bans poll taxes. A requirement to pay for an ID would become a poll tax. States would need to shoulder the burden of issuing gratis IDs.
Because this administration cares so much about the Constitution and definitely wouldn’t find some sort of loophole to get around it
In the US this is only true in some states but not in others.
The bigger principle is that running elections is one of the real “states’ rights,” and the federal government doesn’t really have any business telling them what to do.
Rather why dont you tell me why America is the only civilized (and use that term lightly) nation that considers it suppression to prove ones identity before filling out a ballot to vote?
Why do people like yourself lie so frequently and so easily?
I’m not from the US and have voted without ever having to “prove” my identity.
