BSG is the best sci-fi TV ever made. I watched the mini series on air but then forgot about it.
Then back when it was only just out on DVD I came home I’ve day to my flatmate watching the episode after that one just as Adama jumped the Galactica into the atmosphere and back out again.
After I’d picked my jaw back up off the floor I said I needed to start the series again to catch up.
My flatmate simply got up, ejected the disc and put the first season back in.

Then in the middle of the hardest hitting writing in SciFi there’s a ham-fisted, horribly directed episode about King Arthur coming out of Vorlon deep freeze or whatever

King Arthur didn’t come out of Vorlon Stasis, that was Jack the Ripper. Arthur was just a gunner on the human ship that started the Earth-Minbari War, with severe PTSD and some sort of disassociation disorder.
I think that was Babylon 5 and J Michael Straczynski. You’re thinking of the repeated times when, in the middle of the hardest hitting writing in SciFi, there’s a ham-fisted, horribly conceived episode about a second-rate lounge singer coming out of a Ferengi holodeck or whatever.
I thought it had a very satisfying thump

The Main Street of the Happy Valley base on For All Mankind feels a lot like the promenade on DS9
I was really digging that show but i got really bored in this new season.
Yeah, this latest season isn’t as good. The finale felt rushed and hand-wavey
The funniest line I read about the season finale was “Why was Dev tippy toeing on the antenna array? He could just like stand there with the antenna pointed in the open air, feet on the deck of the array and the transmission would succeed just the same.” It’s all the little stuff like that that made this season weaker overall.
Right? It feels like they could have done more to build tension in that scene if they had another episode.
New generation just never grabbed people the same way, but at least nobody’s fuckin’ their dead son’s best friend or doing missions in the throes of a serious hard drugs addiction. I’m still interested in how it all plays out, and only one season left, which feels about right.
I will note that it seems like understanding Star City, probably every season they eventually make, will be key to extracting full value out of the plot to FAMK S5. They may be going full Marvel with a cinematic universe.
Exactly! This season felt like they couldn’t generate tension in a meaningful way. Like the rebellion could have had more drama, the girl whose dad was crazy could have more going on, and the geopolitical conflict on earth could have been studied more.
On the whole it feels rushed. Like they had a six season run and were told they were getting five. Tops.

which a lot of people think will end with the first interstellar ship, or even first contact. It did feel like they wanted to cram in more than their episode allotment would allow this season, and a lot seemed undercooked. Like, they barely touched on Dev’s role in the automation plans, just assuming we’d infer that the crazy Mars-first guy who’s basically embezzling from his publicly traded company to build more infrastrucure for colonization actually needed to learn that “the right people were already on Mars.” In retrospect, I do kind of appreciate that the farm dome attack was a disaster because he couldn’t imagine life happening in Happy Valley. Not a bad idea, just didn’t have the breathing space it needed to land.
Then, as you say, Jarrett/Stevens was assumed to be interesting because of her family, not because she had anything really compelling to learn or do, and her arc with learning to hate Marsies and then overcoming it was almost laughably compressed. I did think the Baldwin family’s stuff was okay, and I like Alex more than most people do. Also, thank God they didn’t drag Ed and his age makeup through the entire season.
So, I generally agree with you. They’re sprinting through their plot outline to get to their end-game, and the “one season per decade” framing device is creaking under the weight of what they want to do.
And then he goes and makes Alt History Space Hippie Fantasy.
