I hope we never play Rice as an 8 again. You have a seriously elite #6 and you want to shoehorn him as an #8… why? There’s Havertz, ESR & Vieira in the squad who can all play there. ~20 mins of rice as a 6, suddenly the entire team plays well & we score 2, its not a coincidence. Chelsea are a good side but the decison to give them similar levels of respect to City, when you know it absolutely kills our offense was crazy.
We saw him there for one game with Jorgi as the 6. id like to see him there with Partey underneath him at least a couple times before we write off this idea. Kai has demonstrated he can’t do the job there. I think ESR and Vieira are valid there, but we can’t be so quick to discard until we have seen a Partey Rice Odegaard combo.
Can they really play there though? There’s a reason Rice is playing there, the other options aren’t good enough. Just shows how much we fucked up in that left 8 spot. Not one natural player for that position.
