how does it favour an injured player?

Surely its worse for injured players i.e. there’s 10x as many games where they were gaining fitness than somone that was fit all year lol.

Even time wise… super subs would be favoured but not injured players.

It’s way harder to maintain form if a player plays 45 games a season than if he plays 10. Also a player does not play if he’s not fit.

he didn’t take entire games to regain fitness, just sub cameos

Im guessing RvP would be at least scoring in those games when he’s subbed on coming back from injury, meaning he’s getting goals in less minutes played

Look at others on the list though - higher than Drogba, Kane, Ronaldo.

It shows that he was lethal whenever he was available even in his earlier seasons.

He was lethal, yes. But this is also a stat that favours him and other injury prone players.

He seems focused on trying to get a place in this team and we won’t sell mid season unless he’s demanding to leave.

I don’t see him wanting to leave at all just yet. Only way we sell him in January is if Arteta and Edu want to get someone else

Yeah, he’s an Arsenal lad so unless there’s a falling out I think he’ll want to give it a real go before deciding its time to move on.

Off the ball work is negligible if you can hit double figures.

The problem with ESR is, can you rely on him for 90 minutes over 20 games at least? No. That’s the problem.

It would need a loan, but he’s too old for that. Like clockwork, his Huddersfield manager also mentioned the same problem. But if wishes were horses, we’d loan him to a midtable championship team with huge stakes and minutes. That’s what we are doing for Patino.

Loan. Game time. Gym. Mental. Luck with fitness.

Why exactly not? He was playing through injuries before he went down and before that he scored 10 goals just in the back half of the season. Then by the time he got properly fit we added lots of players. He needs game time to get fitness back, but Arteta has been pretty stubborn about substitutions and also doesn’t even take starters off till very late in the game. If Arteta was making subs at 60’ or 65’ then these backups would get those 20-30 minute appearances to help prepare them for starts. And vice versa, take Smith off after 60’ until he doesn’t look gassed.

Substitutions have been oversimplified by us fans. Every fanbase has this myth that their manager sucks at subs. They haven’t sat back to question this view and why they’d be wrong.

Sub analysis needs a lot of context.

What’s the physical state of the game? You can’t throw on ESR when Spurs, United have started running at you at 1-0. You sub on Tomiyasu.

What’s the score? Chasing the game or seeing it out. Is the sub better than the starter for what the objectives are? Will the sub ruin the flow of the game? Injuries. Is the player exhausted? Are we changing tactics? We are going long, sub on Kai, not ESR. Is their CAM running riot? Sub on a DM, not ESR.

Need creation with passing and control? Vieira, not Tierney.

High line, but incompetent attack? Sub on ESR, not Tomi. Too much logic. And a lot of other things.

There have been better names and tools off the bench at all times. It’s not a matter of “manager stubborn”, which in most cases comes out when a manager doesn’t sub on a crowd favourite.
