I’m actually going to go against the grain a little bit here, but I think the reaction to Hooper’s mistake yesterday is overblown. The advantage rule is complicated to implement, a ref has about one second to assess the entire field AND try predict which outcome (playing on or a free kick) is more advantageous. In comparison, a ref in rugby has like 30-40 seconds to weigh up the decision. He clearly misread that Grealish was favorite to get the ball, and seeminly second guessed himself and reacted to that. He also gestured that the foul had been committed, and some are arguing that he may have blown his whistle initially. If that’s the case, you have to stop play.

Of course its a mistake, no debate. But that’s the definition of human error, and understandable imo. Its very different than having multiple refs with access to infinite replays, camera angles and slow-motion, and still getting it wrong.

He was also the ref in the Liv- Spurs game and obviously the Diaz offside goal is more on VAR officials than him, but its a coincidence that Spurs have benefited in both the games he has officiated.

You can’t acknowledge that its VARs fault and then suggest that its something sinister with the on field ref lol

      Nah sorry this isn’t it.

The guy called advantage and then stopped play all within 2 seconds. He panicked.

You should let play go and use the resources you have available, linesman, VAR etc.

He was in no position to make that call and bring play back.

It was another catastrophic, high profile error by the idiots we have officiating our game.

None of these are relevant in the case where Grealish doesnt get the ball first (which he mistakenly thought was the case). VAR can’t go back and give City a free kick.

Hooper could have let play continue, and VAR could have gone back and seen if the goal should stand had Grealish scored.

It was incompetence through and through.

Nope, there is nothing in that incident that would allow VAR to intervene. They can’t overturn a free kick (or lack thereof) or advantage. VAR is literally irrelevant to this specific case, no matter what decision Hooper makes

Why are you not addressing the issue that even City is up in arms about?

Grealish was through on goal. Had he let play continue, and Grealish didn’t score, then there’s no reason for VAR to intervene. No harm, no foul.

Had Grealish scored, then VAR could intervene and see whether play should have been stopped to begin with and whether the goal stands.

This is the crux of the issue, and what should have happened if Hooper was competent.
