Does CR still confuse poor ergonomics / wonky UIs with reliability?
The fuck is this!! Why do I always fall for the shitty ones 😩
Why is Audi always higher than VW? Feel like it’s more about brand image than fact. Audi and VW share parts and drivetrain on over half their lineup. (Q3, Q5, A3, A4, A5, Jetta GLI, GTI/R, Tiguan, Atlas, Arteon all share the same engine and several parts). It’s the larger drivetrains on the Audis that have more issues like the new 3.0T destroying engines because of knock and sky high repair prices. I guess the new Jetta/Taos 1.5L has some fueling issues but nothing widespread.
They’re built better and their owners probably take care of their cars better?
AudiCare essentially pays for all maintenance for the first 4 years
Modern MINIs are incredibly reliable
Honestly surprised to see Mini slot in under Lexus/Toyota. I would never have pegged a Mini as being a reliable car.
BMW / MIni improved a lot, underrated bc of their bad past.
Its not. Consumer reports has issues with self reporting. They rely on paying subscription model and for those limited members to self report.
A mini has never had a reliable track record and every perosn that owned one before. All have sworn them off.
Their current lineup basically shares one engine and transmission in North America. The B38 has been in use in both the current gen Minis along with BMW for nearly a decade now, and it’s proven to be pretty reliable over that stretch. You’ve got a vehicle lineup consisting of only two models that are both nearly 9 years old, sharing the same engine and transmissions that have proven to be reliable over a long period of time now. It shouldn’t be a surprise that they’re high up on the reliability scale at the moment.
They rely on paying subscription model and for those limited members to self report.
Yes, and?
The kind of person who is subscribed to a magazine purely about reviewing the long term reliability of products is exactly the kind of person you want reporting on trouble spots for those products. They’ll be thorough. And according to Consumer Reports, they receive over 300,000 reports from subscribers on cars yearly, which is honestly a pretty solid sample size.
I owned a 2006 Mini Cooper S, and yes it was a total piece of shit reliability-wise. You want to know which magazine reported that it was a piece of shit? Consumer Reports. Want to know when Mini’s reliability ratings started to consistently reach the top 10 on the chart? 2015. They switched to the B38 in 2014 and haven’t updated it since. It all tracks.
I previously owned a Mini for 3 years and I will own another. So, there goes that.
“All have sworn off them”
Peak reddit hivemind parroting. Ever owned one? Ever even driven one?
I’ve owned two, and tracked one. No issues. I’d buy another again
They’re significantly better now that they’ve switched to BMW engines.
A buddy last night said he needed to remove 12 things just to access the battery on a Cooper
That’s not really related to reliability
It defiantly isn’t. Ask me how I know.
Where is suzuki?
Statistics show that suzuki is cheaper over a 10 year period than Toyota Wich means that they should be at about the same level when it comes to reliability.
Suzuki hasn’t sold cars in the US for 10 years…
Besides that, I don’t follow your logic that a car that’s cheaper to run in a 10-year period means it must also be the most reliable.
hondas good too
Toyota. Next question.
Remember for this thread folks: your anecdotal, subjective evidence of an entire brand’s reliability means more than an actual data
The fact KIA is 10th is amazing. It also doesn’t surprise me because anecdotally very few of the people I know who have a KIA have never had any real problems outside of normal wear and tear.
And if your favorite (or least favorite) brand isn’t where you want it to be, it’s ironclad proof that CR is bought off.
Mini as high as it is makes me question the report. No idea whether they’re bought off in any fashion but mini has never been reliable. Fun cars to drive but expensive to fix and have a bad track record. The Rivian is dead last, is that just because they haven’t been around long?
Minis have been reliable since ~2014
The Rivian is dead last, is that just because they haven’t been around long?
New company, low sales, lots of issues as they learn the ropes… Its not surprising, we’ll see if they’re still at the bottom in 10 years.
Toyota
VW cars have been unreliable since the late 1990’s…
No they were unreliable before that.
How is Hyundai anywhere on this list.
As a ford fan im not surprised, its like they have been making shit boxes since the 90s. Maybe they thought if they remove all their cars they cant have a bad report?
My Escape has only 20k miles on it from 1 year of ownership and the batteries only died once, the carpet separating from the floor was easy to fix, the front passenger notices the rattle of something vibrating in the wind on the right side of the car most of the time, and no one sees the little bit of torn super thin fabric on the rear headrest because its on the back side . A++ quality.
The fuck is mini doing at number 3?
The meme of the 3-headed dragon, where Lexus/Toyota are serious, and Mini is the goof
Mini has been reliable ever since their cars became BMWs under the sheet metal.
There’s tons of mini that are unreliable. Most of those have PSA engines that’s why.
Mini uses the really reliable BMW B38/B48 engine now and has largely sorted out all of their longstanding QC issues. Part of that is that the Mini Cooper is a comparatively old and established model in the segment it sits in having not been updated since 2014. There also seems to have been a stronger focus in Mini on quality control recently which is boosting their reliability.
It was a very conscious effort on QC when they switched to the current chassis, after all the problems they had with the R56 era. I worked at a MINI store, and while some of these market segment surveys are BS, it’s quite true that MINI is a very reliable vehicle these days. Unfortunately, a lot of people get scared off by all the outdated information around them.
lol I was just at a Mini dealership and saw they had this bar graph on display and was like uhhhhh what?
They’re engines are now BMW engines iirc. Big improvement over the garbage they used to use.
Lower volume, “enthusiast” cars, that often don’t see use as daily drivers to the same extent as something cheaper.
Shit like that is how you know list like this are total bullshit!
You know how German cares are known for precision engineering, but then they make it way more complex than they need to which leads to reliability issues? Well, at this point Mini is what happens when you keep the engineering, but you cut the complexity to hit a price point.
Yeah, I find that extremely hard to believe
F56 Mini’s are actually pretty damn solid and thankfully no longer require you to take the fucking subframe and shit out just to change the rearward front LCA bushings like the R53 >:(
And Audi 10 places below mini… modern Audis basically all use the same platform and both the 2.0t and 3.0t engines are bulletproof. Then you’ve got VW, which uses all the same shit too like 25 points lower. This doesn’t feel very accurate.
I don’t think CR is accurate
As an owner of a 2011 mini cooper S, seeing mini at number 3 blows my mind. This list is either nonsense or Mini has completely changed.
It’s the latter. Your generation was just a badly engineered vehicle, which, no offense meant as I had a 2012 myself.
Yeah I had to sell my 2009 Mini S at 70k miles because I was going down the same failures on the forums like a checklist
This is me! 95K miles and no issues at the moment 🙄
My 2018 cooper is night and day from the 2012 countryman I used to have. The newer engines are quite solid.
Same, I had a 2012 and currently a 2018 and the build quality jump is really noticeable, especially the longer I’ve had the ‘18.
No shit, your car is 13 years old and their model lineup has been basically unchanged ever since. Not crazy to think they might have worked out some of the kinks in the intervening decade.
Lol, yeah, everything has been completely redesigned since them. The b48 motor was designed from the ground up by BMW. The N series prince engines were blocks designed by Peugeot, and then done up pretty by bmw. Anything after 16 is gonna have the reliability. 2 door hard tops are reliable back to 2014.
Honestly for the most part it’s down to individual models.
Just in my own experiences Nissan and Mazda have been the most unreliable…porsche has been most reliable… ive owned a RAM, Porsche, BMW, Audi, Nissan, mazda, Jeep, infiniti and Acura.
