Doing regular maintenance, dealer starts hitting me with future stuff to do like wheel aligning , corrosion cleaning, but 160 to change a car engine filter sounds ridiculous, is this normal pricing?
They like $30-50 on Amazon if I recall . You just need a screw driver and a vacum to do it yourself on most cars
Look up K&N, buy the filter oil, never pay for engine air filters again. Do it
Edit for autocorrect
Happy cake day
Thanks, didn’t notice tbh
That’s the price for not knowing how to do it
My toyota dealership (Canada) charges $60 for the filter, and its swapped at no charge. Its included in them already doing my oil/maintenance i assume!
$160 for an air filter? That’s crazy high. Every air filter I’ve ever changed was less than three minutes. The filter itself can be expensive, but probably no more than $30. Do what others have said and change it yourself. It’s easy and you’ll feel very proud of yourself.
Damn $199 at my store gets you a synthetic oil change and engine/cabin air filter.
All the more reason to find a local reputable Toyota specialist
What dealer gave you this price? There’s already one location in the back of my head that pulls this kind of pricing
I had a dealer quote me around $50 or so for the air filter (honestly can’t recall if it was cabin or engine, but I think either are fairly equal difficulty on my Highlander).
The OP’s quote does seem high, but also falls in line with common labor pricing practices.
But yea, I paid that $50 to have it done then and there because I didn’t feel like dealing with it that day - then it was “done.” I typically do it myself, either one, because the filters are usually around $15-25 and changing them is one of the easiest things to change.
Someone’s got to eat.
geez, well thats a ripoff for sure at 160$. all my Toyotas have had free oil changes and 2 tire rotations per year with Platinum Family Plan.
after I reached 120k miles on my last 2 trucks I did it myself . Oil Filter OEM Toyota were 8-10$ and 35$ for 6 quarts of Full Synthetic Oil
Dealerships charge so much because their shops have a built in branding. They have Toyota on their sign and they know they will get way more leads than Tony’s Car Repair because it’s Toyota’s Car Repair.
They can overcharge and lose some people on price because they will still keep getting leads walking in the door since they are the “official Toyota shop”.
I seriously think that if they didn’t rob people in basic stuff like air filters, they might build some good will with customers and when a major fix needs to be done, people will go to them for that because there will already be a relationship.
Discount Tire in my city has a great reputation. They do free air checks and patching of tires. I always tip the workers for this but this builds good will. They patched my tire which I didn’t buy from them for free! Guess where I went to get my tires when they needed replacing?
Man if you think the dealers are ripping people off by charging people $110 for filters you should see the margins on the quick lube places.
Buy filter for $30-$40 Spend 3 minutes replacing it yourself.
that’s an absurd scam. would not trust this dealership for anything. Engine air filter is a $30 part and it takes like 3 seconds to change it on most cars. It’s literally in a plastic housing next to the engine. Its held closed with clips you don’t even need any tools to do it.
