Am I the only one not liking this? I’m not planning on buying one, but I’m a car guy, so I’m really into car, and I’m a Toyota person. Why are they making the new Camry hybrid and CVT only? I’ve heard CVT’s aren’t as good as traditional transmissions.
You can look at Mazda if you want to continue the traditional automatics. I’m personally see CVTs as a non issue for Toyotas, they’re boring sure… but I’m buying into a reliable ecosystem.
I guess you aren’t going to buy one. There are plenty of other cars for you, I suppose
You have the choice to not buy either versions. If all you care about is your car being a gas guzzler you can choose from multiple other brands.
Calling a Toyota Camry that isn’t a hybrid a “gas guzzler” is a little wild, don’t you think?
Sadly, 25 MPG is a gas-guzzler in today’s world when cars can easily accomplish 30-50 MPG.

The eCVTs are extremely reliable and more fuel efficient. As to the Hybrid part, Toyota is spending billions investing in battery manufacturing and battery research to prepare for EVs. Might as well streamline the production on the more advanced model that is also going to retain its value much better.
Toyota is going about it in what I think is the best way. We need to ease into EVs more than they’re trying to right now. The tech still just isn’t there. For a while HEV and PHEV are going to be the go to until either charging tech or battery tech catches up.
My “conspiracy theory”, if you can call it that, will be Toyota going hybrid but instead of a gas or diesel engine they’ll further refine hydrogen and use it as the fuel of choice if they can get enough momentum behind it.
Thanks for coming to my TED talk.
Hydrogen>>>>>>>>>>>>EV
The eCVT found in the new Camry is not like a traditional CVT
I like hybrids but also not big on CVT, if I was to buy a new Toyota, would likely be the Crown Platinum.
Which makes me question, if CVT’s are better why did Toyota not use it in the top of the line Crown?
MPG is why
eCVT does not equal CVT.
Toyota’s eCVT is rather good. But I agree I wish they would have kept the V6 for one more generation.
Toyota’s Hybrid Synergy Drive is a set of planetary gears that’s now referred to as the eCVT, and comes with all FWD Toyota hybrids except for those with the Hybrid Max turbo. It’s been around for a couple of decades and is completely different from the band type CVT. It’s durable and reliable, going for hundreds of thousands of miles in taxi duty. The electric motor gives you a nice push from a standing start, before the gas engine noisily revs up to where it’s most thermally efficient, typically 2500-3000 rpm with gentle pedal application per a Carplay OBD app.
The 3.5L V6 is doomed as it’s was too dirty for upcoming tailpipe emissions standards. The hybrid version will live on in a couple of PHEV applications - Lexus TX, Century SUV.
At the end of the day your gripe is with one boring automatic Toyota to another. If you care about shifting gears buy a manual. The only reason it sounds odd is because youve spent your whole life in trad automatics. You still have choice.
The eCVT is totally fine. Nissan ruined the CVT name but Toyotas works very well and is super efficient. In a car like the Camry I think it’s a smarter idea to go with that transmission, it isn’t exactly meant to be a sports car
Yeah their decision to force a cvt and hybrid on people makes me not want to buy. We need a reliable daily driver, so I guess we will look at a Lexus es or a current Camry because I don’t want a hybrid cvt
You may want to buy soon because the eCVT will take over all Toyota/Lexus non-HybridMAX systems.
Hybrid eCVT is a reliable daily driver. lol.
I don’t want one. I want something I can take to my mechanic and not get bent over
The ecvt is nothing like the regular cvt. I think they should call it something else to stop people from associating the two . I have a RAV4 hybrid and when in normal or sport mode I feel it’s giving me all the power in those modes instantly . I don’t feel hampered by the transmission at all.
Heck I think the tires can’t handle the torque of the rear motor mlactually.
They REALLY need to change the name of the ecvt. The ecvt is nothing at all like regular cvts. The ecvt uses a planetary gear system, nothing at all like a regular CVT.
Having said that, I’m kinda bummed it’s gonna be all hybrid.
I don’t like modern phones. I like rotary dial phones. What happened to choice?
