You know the story, it’s probably similar to yours, I fell in love with Porsche, in particular the 911, at an early age. I’ve been a car enthusiast for as long as I can remember and I’ve had my fair share of fun to drive vehicles over the years (AMG’s, M3, Subarus, modded Hondas, turbo LS trucks, etc.). The 911 has always been just out of my reach. As my career has grown and my business expanded I am now in a position where I can buy one. Since 2020 I’ve lusted after a 992 C2S in Gentian Blue. After going to PECLA a few times I nearly made that hefty financial decision about 18 months ago, I even signed the contract for a private party sale only for the seller to back out last minute.

Now today I am about 12 months away from comfortably affording a 992. The downside? This would put a damper on any sort of exterior remodeling that the wife and I have been talking about for our home. I can’t have a 992, a pool, and a putting green at the same time. I could however find an older 911 and enjoy that while accomplishing the other things. Naturally I find myself looking online and I came across this beauty. https://forums.pelicanparts.com/porsche-cars-sale/1121090-1979-911sc-coupe.html The minimal amount of research I’ve done shows that this car is priced pretty close to right and is in great shape. I know next to nothing about the G body cars but I really like this one. I would likely buy this, sell a car to make space (my 09 GX470 beater), and enjoy it while performing the house work and likely saving up for another, newer 911. Am I crazy to think that adding this to the fleet would be a good idea? One that would add smiles for miles? What do I need to know about the G body?

I love the idea of how raw, visceral, natural and real an older 911 could be. Our M3 Comp is a quick precision machine. I want something that smells a bit and makes me feel alive, even if it does 0-60 in 5 seconds. What does /r/porsche think?

Sell the M3 and get a used 992?

the museum piece is nice to look at or part of a collection but not for miles upon miles of worry-free spirited driving.

Putting green though, do that and pool and get 50,000 mile 991.2 base for well under 100k, tune it, drive the shit out of it, then see if you want another one later.

The SC is considered among the most reliable 911 models. My concern would be that it has a safety design and equipment that is now over 40 years old. No ABS, no airbags, etc.

A later 996 or 997 would be in the same price range and have much more modern safety equipment. They are both more involving than newer 911s yet have modern safety features.

If it was me, I would prefer to have a newer car to put my family and myself inside of if I planned on driving it very much.

Fair point! I have two 60’s era vehicles with almost no safety features so I recognize the risk involved. Not saying it’s a wise choice but I at least acknowledge that I’m likely toast if I get in an accident.

I would rather do all the things that need be and you might fall in love with the older Porsche. They have more soul than the 992’s.

Don’t fucking do it bro it’s the only thing that might make you happy! Honestly though I would think about your happiness goals as well if you really want a 992 talk to the wife and say hey this is something I have wanted for a long time and would want it. Long term having the car you want and pushing out a remodel that you can do any time is something that you need to decide on.

Go get a 997, enjoy one of the most engaging sports car experiences you can buy and still take care of your home and family.

Get what you want when it makes financial sense. Don’t settle just to get one now. I would also ignore the price predictors. I bought a CPO 992 C2S at the end of August and if anything inventory seems lower and prices just as high, if not higher, since then. Regardless, these aren’t investments.

Buy a 991 GTS, or 991.2S and tune it 500+ hp and do one house project. Later down the road buy a 992 when prices drop. Happy wife happy L…. Etc
