I always had a soft spot for Subaru’s, and I now found a well maintained, bone stock 2002 WRX prodrive for a good price.

It’s very tempting. I only had my 2.0 Scirocco for 7 months now and I really like it. But that Subaru…

But not as likely on a stock 2.0 right? Do they really all implode before 200k?

The headgasket thing is largely a myth for turbo 2.0 EJs of that age. They had different headgasket design than the infamous 2.5s.

This is what I have read in NASIOC forums and as the owner of a reliable 2002 WRX I tend to believe it.

For a project car? Yes okay

For a daily driver? Hell nah that’s almost a classic

I’d steer clear if it’ll be your only car. As a daily driver, you’re loosing a lot of reliability by selling what you’ve got for the subie.

If it’s going to be a project car, then it’d be a wicked deal and a lot of fun to drive, but these things don’t stand up to high mileage. I saw in another comment that you put 10-15K on per year. I don’t see the subaru standing up to that long term, especially with their well known engine issues.

14000 euro for a 20 year old car with 140k km, and to use it as your only car?

This can’t be serious. It would make more sense if it was an STI, but either way the car will be a significant downgrade in reliability.

Do you really want to be talked out of buying a WRX? If so I can definitly try and convince you to buy something better… if you want an AWD car the Lancer Evolutions have a much better awd system… symmetrical all wheel drive is a fancy way to say a pretty basic awd system. If you want a project car I highly suggest a Lancer Evolution over a WRX as they make significantly more power per mod/$ put into it. Evos are much more reliable if you plan to race or drive the car hard. Evos are significantly easier to work on and are more similarly laid out to other modern cars providing a great building block or a space to learn. If you don’t want to look like the majority of teens I would stay away from the WRX. If you want a driver’s car the Lancer Evolutions are truly a step above all cars anywhere close to its price range. A lot of the evo parts are similar enough to older models that even junk yard parts off of an older model can be used and found cheaply.

Long story short don’t buy a WRX. Buy an Evo if you want an AWD 2.0L car that had a manual option.

An old car can drive the same distances as a new car provided they are maintained well. I’d say go for it.
