Didn’t GM do this with the latest Vette? or maybe Ford with the GT40? Someone else did this recently on a hyped vehicle.
Ford did this with the GT. They claim that they tried to only sell the car to people who would go out and show off the car. GM said that they would remove the warranty from Z06’s that were flipped. Ferrari does it differently where they have their own hierarchical list of people who can buy the new cars and you can move up the list by buying old Ferrari and less desirable new Ferraris. If you sell to flip one they just take away your ability to buy new Ferraris.
I think this is different though. I think there will be Tesla fanatics who will over pay for the truck. However, I think many of the people will receive this and be filled with regret after finding out how terrible it is and that the F-150 lightning and R1T are so much better. This inability to sell will either force people to keep them or sell back to Tesla at a massive loss so Tesla can try to resell them.

One high level trim of corvette has a provision that if you sell in six months the warranty won’t pass on to the next person.

Lexus did similar with the LFA, they only offered it as a 2 year lease.
Didn’t have to threaten lawsuits because people can’t sell something if you don’t actually own it and this prevented anyone from actually owning one until it had been 2 years old

Yea this is a non-story, even cheap cars like the Ford Maverick had non-resale restrictions. It’s the same thing as scalpers buying low supply goods to make a quick buck

This move is to disincentivize flippers. They must be anticipating demand to outstrip supply by alot.

I’m not offended. Just calling out hipocracy when I see it. This subreddit loves it when a make does this sort of thing when it’s a vehicle they love but make fun of it when it’s not a vehicle they like.

The reasoning is coming from a different place. Other brands are trying to discourage flippers, Tesla is trying to ensure their absolute boondoggle of a vehicle only gets into the hands of their most loyal superfans.
I can find 10 in car reviews of any new hyped model from any other brand 2 weeks before they come out. This vehicle is supposed to be shipping at the end of this month and nobody who’s not a Tesla employee has actually driven it. The entire “shipping” is a dog and pony show where a handful of vehicles will get sold to loyal superfans who are told not to say anything bad about it (Which is already part of the Autopilot Beta agreement).
They’re cosplaying like it’s some super duper high in demand vehicle using the trappings of other manufacturers, when in reality it’s just another shell game to pretend this vehicle isn’t a hot mess.
That’s common with most hype vehicles, Porsche doesnt even let you buy the car now, I heard the most hyped 911s can only be leased with option to buy. I can’t see myself bother with a cyber truck both times I’ve seen one the panels were all over the place with gaps. One of my friends was all about the cyber truck but delay after delay it pushed him towards Rivian and he said he has no interest in switching back to Tesla anytime soon.

My guess is that it is meant to try and reduce price volatility until the company can project actual demand for the thing. It not only keeps flippers in check, but also prevents big selloffs due to buyer’s remorse.

When I was in college, my roommate worked as a mechanic at a dealer that sold DeLoreans. He HATED working on them because it was so easy for a mechanic to get a terrible grease smudge on the body. They’d pretty much drape the whole car with cloth so they wouldn’t accidentally smudge it with a greasy hand.
