I truly don’t understand how in 2023 with all the digitalization we have cars with backup cameras from at best a 2015 mid range smartphone. What’s preventing a manufacturer like bmw for an example from putting a high end sony sensor like the one on the iPhone 15 into their camera modules?

Leave your iPhone camera outside for 7-10 years and see if it works… car electronics are selected to find the balance between the cheapest and most durable to get the car through the warranty period (at least).

Also these cameras are designed to stream data. For a very long time. And work in low light. If you took a raw stream from an iPhone or other modern sensor and put it in a car it probably wouldn’t look very good. Post processing really carries the image quality.

I also feel like there would be some overheating problems if you left the car in reverse for an hour or so.

Security cameras last that long in the same weather conditions.

Why an iPhone camera wouldn’t last? What’s different from a car camera? The electronics are the same. The only reason is cost cutting across all parts of the car.

I’m pretty sure they could make a better quality camera equally as durable as the cheapest one. Cost is probably the only logical answer… It just pisses me off how much they’re cahrging us for cars with bottom line infotainment components.
