Me and my friends (USA) decided to become fans of a premier league team after getting into football recently. We ended up choosing Newcastle for a few different reasons. Being owned by Saudi Arabia was not one of them. I only recently discovered this fact and now I’m wondering if I should change which team I support.

I asked some other friends who are more into the league what I should do and I got pretty mixed responses. The argument for switching was mostly that Newcastle is owned by the PIF, is an example of sportwashing, and supporting them means supporting Saudi. The arguments for staying were that we’ve already decided on Newcastle and every team has some tie to oil money.

I figure you guys have more of an idea than we do so I figured I’d ask.

There’s alot of these posts, and they are getting a bit ridiculous. How the fuck are you going to ask others who your club should be. I’m not trying to gatekeep but for fucks sake it’s a personal matter. If you don’t know that enough about English football watch the MLS.

Learn the history, make a decision based on any connection you can. As an American myself, it took me a bit to know who I supported. That’s Arsenal.

My connection to them was I had relatives from London, they lived in Whitechapel. When I first got into PL football, Arsenal was the closest club to whitechapel so that’s what helped me decide. Plus when I was younger I loved Henry and Bergkamp from watching world cups. After that I went deep into it, watched anything and everything about Arsenal. This was the 2nd to last year of Wenger, after the prime. Alexis and Giroud were still there. Mertesacker was playing, Welbeck, Walcott, Carzola, Oxlade-Chamberlain.

I think you should support Notts County. Black & White, they’re in the 4th tier so they’re not 8th tier shit but they’re not knocking on the champions league door either. They’re not owned by the PIF and Macaulay Langstaff is basically their own Alan Shearer.

“A few different reasons”. Hahaha, sure.

Support who you want. You can’t change anything about the way football is going anyway.

As a rule, you don’t change. But if you’re new to them, and don’t feel an attachment yet, then change. Horrible owners, if I was a fan, I’d feel ashamed.

As someone who chose a team almost at random 15 years ago, I would say do your research and then make a decision. I chose to follow Chelsea when I had no idea what an oligarch even was and I had to deal with the complexity of loving a team that was funded by someone who stood for everything I was against. If who the owners are matters to you then definitely take that into consideration.

When you have a choice and are aware enough to know you have a choice, best to make the best choice for yourself.

It will make no difference HERE. Almost everyone’s got some dirty or bloodied hands at a certain level at the top). Go ask Chelsea fans about Roman Abramovic…
