    Saving you a click:

“people can’t afford new hardware and $80 games. Instead of hiring people who could make a fun game, we fired all the people who could make a flashy, expensive game and then didn’t hire anyone else.”

Edit: On a personal note, this should be viewed as a revival and the ushering-in of a new golden age of games for everyone involved except AAA studios. Indies and tiny passionate studios can spin off of these rotting leviathans, gathering the gold they mistake as flotsam, and do something real.

The crash that came from the market being flooded soulless cash-grab software titles, drowning out the high quality stuff? The crash caused by consumers losing confidence that their money would be well spent because the slop is the same price as the carefully crafted titles? That one, Tim?

Are there any modern parallels to those conditions today, Tim? Hmmmm?

As though his precious Fortnite slop hasn’t helped lead the way in enshittifying the industry.

“I shouldn’t be allowed within 20 feet of anything gaming related as the gaming industry is worse off for all of my terrible decisions.” - Tim Sweeney

Sad fact is, Epic’s grants used to be great for the indie studios that got them. This was before they decided to launch a store of course. Now I don’t know if they even have those grants or if they do I’m sure they come with EGS exclusivity built in.

The article is not that long:

Sweeney noted the industry faces “internal dysfunctions,” such as the high cost of AAA game development, and outside challenges including the ongoing component shortage. “It’s an unexpected, severe disruption,” he said. “There’s an unprecedented wave of investment in building AI systems and data centres, based on the belief that they’re going to have a really transformational role in the economy, and the scale of the economic opportunity there means they can outbid the entire entertainment industry for all the components.” So we’re getting the short end of the stick, and the prices of RAM and storage are quadrupling, and not necessarily stopping there. We should expect there’s just going to be a continual supply crisis for all gaming-relevant hardware for the next three years. The only solution, I think, is going to be building massive new factories to meet the world’s capacity demands – and that will happen."

It’s what you’ve been seeing in the last years: Consoles, GPUs and Gaming PC are getting really expensive. There is a whole generation of younger people now who really can’t afford a gaming PC or that playstation at the newer prices. And that is affecting game developers, because when people can’t afford the hardware, they will not buy the games.

(and what Sweeny is not saying here: If people have less money, they may be able to afford a cheaper PC or a smartphone and will then play on that. I’m playing older, dirt cheap games on my PC and SteamDeck, but that is really shafting AAA-devs)

So nothing new, really, just another higher-up realizing the market is shifting.

And I’m just reluctant to click on articles with sensational/clickbait titles due to that reinforcing their behavior of making those titles. If there’s some new and good reporting worth reading about however, I’m fine with clicking the link.

        Appreciate your comment :-)

That’s the thing here in Lemmy: There are many subs who have a rule that the title of the submission should be the title of the original post. That’s why I’m always posting the original title.

Oh no, not the poor, poor AAA gaming companies who’ve been forcing their devs to bloat their games with slop before laying them off prior to seeing any ROI upon release…

I find articles like this are not nice to read. Almost every sentence is in its own paragraphs, instead block of texts to paragraph.
