House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries (D-New York) has said that he now opposes Medicare for All, flipping on his previous stance just as Democrats are on the cusp of potentially winning back control of the House. 114k lives that have to keep having services paid for while they cling to life in old age for the majority of those lives lost.
We should have universal healthcare but right now the insurance, healthcare provider and pharmaceutical industries make enormous amounts of money in the US in profits that cannot be made anywhere else in the world. They spend billions collectively on lobbying (bribes) to make sure the majority of politicians are against any legislation that impacts the enormous profits that go to billionaire owners and portions that get paid out to very well paid executives and employees in these industries.
The further you are from the top the less you earn, and the owners want it all. Insurance provides zero value, extreme predatory pricing for pharma provides zero value. Wealth siphoning from healthcare providing companies provides zero value. The combination of all three is why our healthcare is absolutely fucked in the US.
I’ve seen low level roles getting paid nearly 200k in these industries. Low level middle managers are easily above that number. If the low level folks are so well compensated you can only imagine what the profits look like at the top.
These salaries do not apply to hands on healthcare providers in low level healthcare roles - but each of those three industries have different nuances and insane payouts to different groups if you look into it deeply. Healthcare providing is like education and generally not very well paid without advanced education… pharma though? Bachelors or masters is 200k+ generally, even in shitty departments like finance or hr. Sales all hit that or get canned.
