The US Treasury is expected to expand the scope of secondary sanctions it can impose on companies and countries that continue doing business with Iran, as the Trump administration seeks to ratchet up economic pressure on Tehran on Monday, a source familiar with the plans told Reuters.
The move is intended as a final warning to countries to cut their commercial ties with Iran, in an effort to bring an end to the US-Israeli war on Iran, the source said.
US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent is expected to unveil further details of the measures at a 1:00 PM EDT (17:00 GMT) news conference on Monday. According to the source, Bessent will also outline a wider economic pressure campaign against Iran that he and US President Donald Trump have called an “economic D-Day.”
Bessent is expected to make clear that countries must choose between aligning with the US or risking having major companies and entities cut off from the dollar-based financial system, the source said.

❗️Iraq pushes back deadline for armed groups to hand over weapons

A senior Iraqi official on Sunday appeared to push back the 30 September deadline for armed groups to surrender their weapons, without explaining the change or setting a new date.
For months, the Iraqi government had maintained that the groups would have until 30 September to disarm. But on Sunday, Prime Minister’s security adviser Qasim al-Araji told state media that the process would instead begin at the end of next month.
“30 September is the date for the international coalition to depart, not the deadline to hand over weapons,” Araji told Al-Iraqiya broadcaster, referring to the US-led coalition.
Government spokesman Haidar al-Aboudi made a similar statement to local media on Friday, despite saying in June that the armed groups had until the end of September to surrender their weapons.
30 September, he said, was “the date for the international coalition to end its presence, not the deadline for armed factions … Perhaps people are confusing the two.”
UPDATE | Iran denies receiving invitation to join Mecca defense pact

Iran has denied reports that it was invited to join the Mecca defense pact between Saudi Arabia, Turkiye and Pakistan, while confirming that proposals have been made to hold talks with the three countries on regional security.
The clarification followed comments by Mehdi Rahimi, head of the Iranian parliament’s Khaneh Mellat news agency, who told Al-Mayadeen on Saturday that Tehran had received an invitation to join the pact and was considering the offer.
However, Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Esmail Baghaei dismissed the claim on Monday, saying Tehran had received no formal invitation. He added that proposals for discussions with the three pact members on wider regional security issues had been made and were being considered.

❗️Less than 20 vessels transit Strait of Hormuz over weekend

Fewer than 20 commodity vessels passed through the Strait of Hormuz over the weekend, according to shipping data released on Monday.
Kpler shiptracking data showed four vessels crossed the strait on Sunday by 02:28 GMT, following 13 crossings on Saturday. The figures could be revised as some ships turned off their transponders while navigating the waterway.
The weekend total compared with 16 crossings on Friday. Two empty very large crude carriers (VLCC) entered the Gulf with their tracking systems switched off, with one bound for Iraq and the other for Bahrain, according to the data.
A VLCC carrying 2 million barrels of Emirati crude left the strait on Thursday.
Kpler data also showed that eight very large gas carriers crossed the waterway over the three-day period. Six entered the Gulf empty, while two carrying liquefied petroleum gas loaded in Iran exited the Gulf.
Traffic remained subdued during the week ending 21 August, as vessels abandoned planned crossings or diverted to routes through the northern part of the strait following attacks, the UK Maritime Trade Operations said in a report.
According to the report, which was based on Automatic Identification System data, 89 vessels exited the strait while 103 entered during the seven-day period.
❗️Syria & Israel hold US-mediated talks in Jordan
Syria and Israel held high-level, US-mediated talks in Jordan on Sunday aimed at reducing tensions following recent Israeli strikes on Syrian territory, Syria’s state news agency SANA reported, citing a diplomatic source at the Foreign Ministry.
According to SANA, the discussions focused on practical measures to stop Israeli strikes, arrests and targeted operations, while also seeking to revive negotiations on a security agreement that could serve as a foundation for a broader future deal.
The talks also addressed efforts to reduce tensions between Israel and Turkiye.
❗️China urges West Asia, Gulf parties to return to dialogue
China’s Foreign Minister Wang Yi said Monday that tensions in West Asia and the Gulf had once again reached a critical point, urging all parties to return to dialogue and negotiations as soon as possible.
Wang made the remarks during a meeting in Beijing with Kuwait’s Foreign Minister Jarrah Jaber al-Ahmad Al-Sabah, according to a Chinese Foreign Ministry statement.
Wang said “the old script of recurring conflict should not be repeated” and stressed that reducing tensions should be the immediate priority.
He added that China was ready to deepen coordination with Kuwait and continue working toward restoring peace and stability across the region.
