That’s the problem with an OS being exclusively in control by a single developer. The developer can hike licencing, and even add subscription costs in the future.
MacOS has the same issue (but even worse, they fully control the hardware too, so can take measures to even do things like make migration more difficult).
Linux is controlled by many vendors. If one hikes prices, you can switch to another and continue using your software
