Except cops are what save you from harassment by people like me for calling them dumb. Cops protect you from psychopaths with poor impulse control, just the existence of them is a deterrent.

If they would only police their own members, it wouldn’t be a problem. But the entire structure and culture of police forces centres around them protecting their own and placing themselves above the population with a toxically adversarial us-vs-them attitude that encourages abuse and corruption.
