“…with all due respect to the fabulous J K Rowling…”

The amount of respect that godawful transphobic shitebag is due is none. She has done more to hurt women and foster inequality in the last few years than most people could manage in a lifetime (and she’s done it under a banner of championing women’s rights while actually doing the opposite).

With all due respect to your opinion, you should pay attention to the entire post, including the date-stamp of when it was posted.

Because there is a chance the person who wrote it might well agree with you but might not have been able to see the future when they wrote it ELEVEN GORRAM YEARS AGO.

Wow, I really had the feeling Rowling already went down the shitter in mid 2010’s, but according to Wikipedia she started doing it 2018/9. Somehow it felt far older to me.

My guess is that the American election in 2016 triggered a much larger wave of anti-trans activity on the web, and she picked up on it, which is why it started then.

Also the last book was released in 2007, and the last film in 2011, and while she is an insane, bigoted, batshit crazy horrible witch of a woman, she isn’t stupid. There’s no way she was going to start a crusade like this while people were still flocking to read the books and go to the cinema - she’s wait until the audiences had died down and the reading figures had dropped.

Yeah I too thought it was a lot longer ago than it was!

edit: Also 2015 is much further back than it feels like!

Reading this in a post is the Internet discourse equivalent of seeing a map that has Yugoslavia on it.

I’ll bet somewhere out there there are internet posts that say Sir Jimmy Savile is a good man who does great charity work, that Prince Andrew is a good and decent man and Joss Whedon is a genius.

Times change and we change with them.

Note that this is from 2015.

Forks is Twilight, no? Not quite sure how this description fits my (granted, very casual) impression of that literary world, anyone want to enlighten me from a fan’s perspective?

Bella forces The Cullens to respect the werewolves (their natural enemies), she forces The Cullens to accept her child and when The Volturi come for them she doesn’t flee, she instead says “screw them - we are going to defend my child and defend me” and she gathers an ARMY to stand up to them.

She believes in the right of the minority to exist and she fights for it.

The idea of people being either good or bad, and deserving of punishment if the latter, is some conservative bullshit. People are products of biology, environment, and circumstance, and are usually very malleable. We need to stop buying into that right wing rhetoric of just condemning people, and focus on how to create change within them.

Jadis destroyed an entire world with a single word because she wanted to defeat her sister.

And she turned people who disagreed with her to stone.

I think most people - liberal and conservative and moderates - would agree that makes her bad.

I would argue that it makes her someone who has done a shitload of evil, and on priors will do a bunch more if permitted. I would also argue that she is not inherently herself “bad”, and is capable of making better choices.

Of course. given the question of, “So hey Jadis is here and here is the Jadis-killing button, what are you going to do?” obviously we push the button, because the priors and EV suck, but we do think there is a meaningful difference there that it’s useful to draw, because most cases have not killed a world, and thinking you are bad rather than have done bad, establishes a story where it’s easiest to keep doing bad things. Why wouldn’t you? You’re bad, after all.

I was just point out that there is a difference between fiction and the real world.

In fiction there are people who are bad. They are just BAD and will be bad. They will never be good.

Jadis - in the Narnia stories - is (quite literally) the embodiment of evil. That is her role in the story. Her entire role is set up as the opposite of Aslan who is (quite literally) The Jesus figure, so clearly, she is not going to be a good person. Every act she does, every move she makes, ever decision that she takes is bad.

I am aware the real world is not like that, but that’s why we have fiction - so characters can be created that are NOT real.

I would also refer you to Oscar Wilde and his opinion on fiction (The Importance of Being Earnest).

I fully agree but it perfectly fits into a lot of rhethoric you see on here, so I don’t think it’s entirely unfitting.

The arc of the universe is long, and it bends to justice.

If you look at the short term, sure - you are right. But if you look at the long term, I think you’ll find you aren’t.

I am kind of making a career over pissing people off in regard to the author of Harry Potter - I got banned from one site (that was kind of hilarious), and I’ve got in to debates on tumblr over whether writing HP fanfiction is still an acceptable pass-time. (I say it is, various people say it isn’t).

Don’t think for a minute I support, endorse or condone her stance, but I just have… a differing opinion on certain aspects of this debate, and I am not shy about making them known :)

Have you read any of my fanfiction? Because that seems an overly judgemental review of my work if you haven’t.

Because the hill I am dying on is quite a different one to the one you think I am dying on.
