Odegaard has not been very good this season. But also his role has changed in a way that I don’t think benefits him or the team.
He needs more 1st/2nd phase responsibilities. I feel like he’s more our Bernardo than KDB. The Bournemouth match in particular showed how much he can help our buildup.
Odegaard is indeed a 1st/2nd phase midfielder, but he can’t start for us there because he is not that good in the duels (as the graph shows). I think Arteta has been trying to square the circle by having Ode drop deep for buildup with Havertz pushing forward, and Havertz also doing the bulk defensive work in the middle. It’s something that should work if Havertz starts producing but if not, then we need to seriously reconsider Ode’s role in the future.
