- Web: Firefox + uBlock Origin
- Mobile (Android only): Grayjay
- TV (Android): Smarttube
- iPhone/iPad: Brave Browser
Enjoy
Why not Firefox + uBlock Origin for Android?
You can, but I like using an app, because for example I can use pip with grayjay (watch video while doing something else), I’m not sure if that is possible with firefox + ublock
At least for me it doesn’t keep autoplaying videos/going to next video on Youtube (probably a setting I could change somewhere). Grayjay is pretty handy for other media platforms as well.
Newpipe on android also works. Also viewing YouTube via the browser with uBlock origin on mobile works.
Web option also works for mobile.
A more bigger list:
Web: Firefox (or any firefox fork on apple tech you can use safari + adguard) with Ublock origin + libreredirect. The yt frontend sites: Invidious,Piped(broken at this time),Poketube (my personal favorite)
Mobile (Android and Ios): Yattee(The only ios client, broken can only stream local downloaded content or from Poketube servers.),Clipious (invidious client built with flutter),Libretube(Piped, broken at this time),Grayjay (source available not strictly youtube client),Vlc media player (Ios and android not strictly a yt client it can play downloaded videos or stream from poketube servers),Tubular(Newpipe with sponsor block and return youtube dislike not strictly a yt client you can use regular newpipe aswell.),Freetube(unofficial).
PC(Linux,Windows and Macos): Plasmatube, (fits well with kde plasma a little to quiet),QTube(Yt client built with qt,Embeds yts site),Freetube (if your fine with Electron which is using chromium),Vlc media player (said above).
Additionally, there’s freetube for android, newpipe, tubular (newpipe with sponsorblock), and safari + adguard
also grayjay is source available rather than open source
Thanks for correcting me and adding more frontends, I just out some on top of my mind.
Am I just an idiot or is Yattee basically unusable?
It is unusable for me aswell(I tried it on my moms iphone), I changed the reply so that people know.
I want Yattee to succeed. When I could get it to work (like 5% of the time), it was refreshing that I was searching for and finding my own videos, not just being distracted by and fed the YouTube algorithm.
- PC: FreeTube
Also available unofficially for Android.
My premium is about to run out, and I had solutions for both my TV and phone via my TV’s homebrew store and ReVanced. Didn’t know that Brave just completely shut down ads on iPad, though. Amazing tip, thanks a bunch!
these posts are just getting ridiculous. USE. BRAVE. OR. FIREFOX.
did not know that, thanks. well, the biggest plus for me on brave was the background play option. any other browsers you recommend instead of it that has this feature?
You mean on android mobile? Firefox for Android has a extension that works nicely to allow you to play e.g. youtube videos in the background: https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/video-background-play-fix/
For iOS though I’ve got no idea, sorry :(
yes android thanks
idk what browsers that is it sorry.
YouTube ads cost about $0.026 (two and a half cents) per 30 seconds of viewing. This is called cpv.
It’s not fair that ss a viewer I’m not able to bid on my own to show myself an empty ad slot. I’m looking at the price of premium and it definitely seems like more revenue for YouTube than I’d give them from ads.
I have premium too once I saw an ad and complained and it turned out to be a bug. I even had engineers reach out with questions when they were fixing the issue.
Maybe that has happened here? They have announced any changes.
I get ads on premium sometimes. I think it’s a fluke but def unacceptable
Damn I just have ublock origin, so I never get ads and I don’t pay a cent. Hope your premium membership works out for you tho
Thanks, I’m still grandfathered in at the beta price, but I mainly use it for discovering music to add to my Plex collection. The free YouTube is a bonus for me.
I know it’s temporary, I’ll probably cancel when Im asked to pay full price
I didn’t realize that they still had grandfather’s subscriptions, I was the same where I got it at a lower price, but they decided that they weren’t going to honor that price 2 years ago and raised it anyway. I’ve told myself I’m dropping the sub if it goes up again because honestly it’s current price is a little outrageous. But I watch over a thousand hours of YouTube a year so therefore it’s worth it to me.
The thing is I don’t think I’m supposed to be. They said they’d terminate it so I’m just grateful for the borrowed time I have.
I’ve been subscribed since the minute GPM launched the beta.
Is it really a fluke or just boiling the frog slowly?
Oooh, like when the whole purpose of paying for cable television was no ads?

That’s among the reasons why even with premium an ad blocker is required.
It’s a bug with the android app.
I’ve seen it maybe 3 times in 8ish years on my phone. Never once in the TV app.
If I’m paying monthly for a service without ads and I see a single (1) advertisement, I should at least get a month of free subscription because the other party is in breach of contract.
It’s probably a bug. And to excuse the devs at Youtube, this is the first and only Premium client.
Is it really a bug or is it just boiling the frog slowly?
For everyone on Android, you can just patch the youtube app using ReVanced, which will remove ads, add sponsorblock, allow you to hide shorts and the “People also watched” sections. It can be pretty tricky to patch if you don’t know what you’re doing so feel free to tell me if you run into any issues.
If you don’t care about the algorithm and your feed, you can get the third-party client NewPipe, it’s FOSS
but sometimes crashes while reading some videosIt does not seem to crash anymore, so good thing!Pick one!
I don’t think I’ve ever had NP crash. What do you mean by “some videos”?
Strange, I’ve had a video that crashed newpipe every time but now it seems to play fine. Maybe because it was a “Coming soon” video? Anyways it seems like it works fine now, I also had a bug where leaving the app would crash the app instead of doing background play but I also can’t get it to occur again. I’ll edit my original comment.
I use gray Jay instead, it has become really good the last wave of updates. Wife is on revanced, I’ll change her over if gray jay adds shorts.
There is still a few paper cut issues with it, but over all I prefer gray jay over the official YouTube app.
Well, thanks for sharing! The more options the better!
Check if you still have premium?
That’s what the circled logo in the top left is for
I know, but maybe it’s related to:
If you haven’t “accepted” the new prices, maybe you get this half-assed Premium.
The only time I’ve had an ad on YouTube with premium(on their site) is when I went in to invisible mode.
In my opinion it’s absolutely stupid that invisible mode has the capability of detecting that you have an account because it skips the age verification blocker on content-sensitive videos, but it gives ads to people with premium. It’s obviously able to see that you have a YouTube account so therefore it should be able to just do the next step of saying okay does this account have premium. The only thing people are asking for was it to not log the videos they’re watching but they had to make it some Next Generation NASA level secret hidden profile shit that doesn’t actually do anything.
Also it really bugs me that they’ve added ads for YouTube and beds on discord. If I have my YouTube account linked to my Discord account I should not receive ads on the in bed. It should be able to see my YouTube account via electrons cookie system and be able to link it to an account that has premium.
That’s why i never bought YouTube premium
Seeing ads in premium is ridiclous, For fuck sake!
“This is why I never bought YouTube premium”
Points out very recent issue with YouTube premium
The implication being they never bought premium because this seemed inevitable.
A few years ago I got this experience on mobile and posted about it on r/assholedesign, but it was autoremoved as a banned repost even though I didn’t see anything like it. Yet another ban happy subreddit, I’m glad to be out of that place. This is truly awful though, and why I’m happy to use revanced.
I thought they didn’t target children with their ads. Did I imagine that or is a barbie a product aimed at adults in Germany?
That was something that gets discussed now and then in politics but no. We have a lot of ads targeted to children.
Just keep jacking up the ad-free tier price level.
These ads are preem, choom
