My dad was the worst with that when my parents had dogs. I taught them early that when I say, “Not for puppy” it meant they’re getting nothing from me, whereas, “That’s all, no more” meant that if I did give them some, they weren’t getting any more.

First the dogs would beg me. When I said either of those phrases, they then went to my mom. My mom would give them some, but also would eventually stop.

Then they would go to my dad. Because my dad’s guaranteed to feed them from his plate, never turning them away. They knew they could try me and my mom first to maximize their table scraps, but that my dad was a solid bet. My dad couldn’t help it. I even have a picture somewhere of when we visited my brother’s place (he and his wife used to breed dogs), and there are 7 dogs circled around him as he eats.

I made the last person that fed my dog scraps wash her ass after the inevitable shitsplosion happened.

I warned them it would happen (she has the worst gut), and that they would have to bath her if they did it, they insisted it was fine… And then the never did it again.

10/10, would make people face the repercussions of their actions again.

I just teach the dog not to beg for food. If she gets any scraps it’s not when I’m eating and it goes in her bowl.

but you do know that a lot of human food is not very healthy or straight up posion for dogs?

          • Meat, bread, cheese, potatoes, and just about every veggie is fine though. The exceptions are short enough that most dog owners should be aware of them. Onions, chocolate, grapes, garlic, and tomatoes.

But so fucking many snotty pet owners practically brag about their dogs not eating human food or claim they get pancreatitis if they eat a pretzel.

My dogs beg politely off to the side and always get the last bite of everything.

A lot of small breeds really can’t handle the same wide variety of food that other breeds can. My husky is a garbage disposal with an iron stomach. My chipoo gets an upset tummy just being shown a picture of cheese.

Have you tried giving him queso? /s

Kibble is a WW2 invention, yea. But you can feed a dog human grade food without training them to beg from your table. Just like the guy above, it goes in the dog bowl, not the floor.

I feed from the table after I’m done eating and they patiently wait for it.

Yeah that’s begging and we train our animals to not to do that.

And animals that beg will also steal. People cant leave food unattended on their kitchen counter and think that’s normal or acceptable. Blows my mind.

We have cats, if they start associating human food with their food they’ll be all over the counters and tables when you turn around or up in your face when you try to eat. It’s just easier to not associate our food with theirs in their minds at all.

We give them stuff sometimes but it’s a treat, one goes absolutely mad for grocery store rotisserie chicken, and we don’t serve off our plates.

My dog begs because I don’t think that’s a bad thing. My dog also leaves a slice of sausage on the floor when I leave the room. Those are two very different things. I just taught him, that food is only what I give him, so he doesn’t accidentally eat anything dangerous to him.

and they patiently wait for it.

Yea that is exactly the behaviour I find undesirable. But I was raised around large dogs that could take your dinner from you. As such they were raised to have zero connection between humans eating and them eating.

This. Also, I’ve trained my dog to think that begging for food is done by laying down across the room, so when she is begging, it’s not annoying.

Did the same to my old Border Collie. People always said “He’s so polite, he’s not even begging.”

Oh, but he IS. You just don’t see it 😁
