Yes, 16% for a 10 year note is very expensive but what’s the alternative? They can’t sell debt on the international market, so that leaves domestic borrowers . The war cannot be ended without a glorious victory and there’s only so much other spending to cut, so do they pay for it?

According to Reuters (thank you Wikipedia), when Ukraine imposed sanctions on Wildberries in 2021 for selling goods like anti-Ukrainian books and Russian military uniforms, the company’s response was:

“Wildberries does not expect any negative impact on the company. The sanctions may harm only Ukrainian entrepreneurs and consumers, who will be deprived of a wide range of goods at affordable prices,” it said, adding that it did not ship goods via Ukraine.

Apparently, unexpected shit happens and those sanctions actually did end up having a negative (high explosive, incendiary) impact on the company.
