nonviolent civil disobedience and direct action are just tactics that work in specific circumstances and can achieve specific goals. pretty much every violent movement for change was supported by non-violent movements. and non-violence often appears in a form that is unacceptable to the slatestarcodex contingent. Like Daniel Berrigan destroying Vietnam draft cards, or Catholic Workers attacking US warplanes with hammers, or Black Lives Matter activists blocking a highway or Meredith and Verity Burgmann running onto the pitch during a South African rugby match.

These guys really are just another boring cult. They’re Christian Scientists. They’re aesthetic realists.

It irks me to see people casually use the term “brutalist” when what they really mean is “modern architecture that I don’t like”. It really irks me to see people apply the term brutalist to something that has nothing to do with architecture! It’s a very specific term!

That Couple are in the news arís. surprisingly, the racist, sexist dog holds opinions that a racist, sexist dog could be expected to hold, and doesn’t think poor people should have more babies. He does want Native Americans to have more babies, though, because they’re “on the verge of extinction”, and he thinks of cultural groups and races as exhibits in a human zoo. Simone Collins sits next to her racist, sexist dog of a husband and explains how paid parental leave could lead to companies being reluctant to hire women (although her husband seems to think all women are good for us having kids).

I think starting with Sam Bankman Fried is a solid idea. Relatively informed members of the general public a) know who that guy is, and b) know that he made some really poor decisions. He does not have the silicon valley mystique that attaches itself to some other adherents, I think fewer people will think “well that guy is really smart, why would he be in a cult”. Then you can go back and explain EA and LessWrong and Yudkowsky’s role in all of this.
