makeshiftreaper@lemmy.worldto Fuck AI@lemmy.world•The Shadow Side of Open Source AIEnglish2·40 minutes agoI’m going to disagree here. We do regulate some of those things, there’s plenty of things that are illegal on the internet and many governments including the US will hold you accountable for hosting illegal content. Gun makers have been sued on multiple occasions because of their unsafe practices. Car manufacturers are responsible for selling vehicles that meet minimum safety standards
The creator of a tool should have some level of responsibility for it, even if someone else utilizes their creation nefariously. I’m not saying Sam Altman should be sued for manslaughter when chatGPT tells someone to kill themselves (there’s plenty of other things I think he belongs in jail for, but I digress), I just think that being open source doesn’t absolve you of the responsibility of putting up guard rails. Not every invention deserves to see the light of day
I bring my water bottle to theaters and nobody gives a flying fuck. 98% of the time it is water but every now and then I do bring an alcoholic beverage and nobody ever bothers checking to make sure it’s only water
Reloaded and Resurrections? Girl, you can do better

So I could choose to see information about people above their heads. Mood, age, name, net worth, and stuff like that. It’d be something I could turn on/off and choose what’s stats I want to see at any given time

makeshiftreaper@lemmy.worldto Unpopular Opinion@lemmy.world•All commercial airlines should come together to create a universal no fly list for passengers who can't behave.English13·14 days agoI disagree, so this is probably a good post. I view your proposal as similar to the death penalty. If I knew with 100% certainty that this list would only ever be used for absolute shit heads who can’t behave then I’d be all for it. However, we live in the real world and there’s a lot of edge cases. There was a video of a little girl singing Disney songs over the speaker on a plane that was delayed recently, what if that little girl never got to fly again because her mom told her to do something for internet fame? Maybe a flight attendant goes on a power trip and antagonizes a customer into a moment that gets them banned. Airplanes are the most realistic way of travel in a lot of the world and by far the most realistic way to travel internationally and giving full control of that method of transportation to the whims of mega-corps feels very dangerous to me
It’s all fun and games until the dolphins unionize

makeshiftreaper@lemmy.worldto No Stupid Questions@lemmy.world•If you were to launch a rocketship parallel to the earth, on wheels, how big would the ramp have to be to get it into space?English7·19 days agoSome more physics things, every planet has a limit on how high the tallest possible mountain is based off their surface gravity, the type of rocks present in the crust, and thickness of the crust. On Earth it turns out that limit is pretty close to Mt Everest’s height. Space is still about 50 miles above Everest so I don’t think humans could build this ramp with our current understanding of physics
If you want to go to space slowly then you can just do what Felix Baumgartner did and take a special type of balloon to get into space. Unfortunately, if you’re not traveling 25,000 mph relative to the surface of the planet, you’re going to fall back to the planet. Just like Felix did

makeshiftreaper@lemmy.worldto No Stupid Questions@lemmy.world•If you were to launch a rocketship parallel to the earth, on wheels, how big would the ramp have to be to get it into space?English28·19 days agoSo for physics reasons it doesn’t really matter what technique you’re using to leave Earth. If you’re going to try to go to space successfully, you’re going to have to go a minimum speed of 25,000 miles per hour. That’s called the escape velocity and it’s a different value for every body of mass in space

However it’s childish and naive to think both racism and sexism were not significant reasons that America, a deeply racist and sexist country, did not choose a black woman to lead it
