

Old video game consoles had dedicated sound chips with a range of tones, sounds, and total notes they could play. They simply didn’t have the memory to store music on the cartridge so they would store instructions for the sound chip instead which took far less space. As a result you can learn to recognize the sounds of various machines. From my brief search it appears GB and GBC used functionally the same chip
