Great points/observations. U S. television and movie writing at that time was largely dismissive, demeaning, or a myriad of other negative things toward many non-male, non-white, non-Christian, etc. people (my partner was recently pointing out negative Jewish stereotypes written into the dialogue of Will and Grace, a television series from the late 90’s/early 2000’s). It sucks, and we shouldn’t forget that it happened, and we should keep on pushing to do better.
