  • Rep. Tom Suozzi’s criticism of Assembly Member Zohran Mamdani and other Democratic Socialists of America (DSA) members was uncalled for. Instead of telling elected members to leave the party, he should have remained silent.

The organization and its members have openly discussed the idea of a “dirty break” or starting their own party on numerous occasions. This issue was even a topic at their recent Chicago convention, making it a relevant point for Suozzi to comment on.

However, the DSA has every right to decide its own political strategy. After he left Congress, his seat went to George Santos so he is in some mind-sight that his style of politics wins. This is at odds with us Democrats advocating to respond to Gerrymandering with more Gerrymandering. Being generous to him, not sure “moderate” candidates are the bet to go with.

Ultimately, Mamdani’s campaign increased turnout and won in most districts. If progressives and leftists have had to to compromise, then the rest of the Democratic Party should be willing to do the same. If only left the topic about DSA, then to me it would had made some sense but he shouldn’t tell any elected/nomitated Democrats to leave(Or pointing at the wrong ones).

  • In the 19th century, Russia forced Iran to cede huge chunks of land in the Caucasus after a couple of wars. The change over to Soviets in Russia brought a brief pause but not before long the Soviets started to get into Northern Iran wanting access and use of their oil.

Reza Shah Pahlavi tried to keep Iran neutral during World War II, but with a growing German presence in the country, the UK and Soviets weren’t having it called a truce once Nazis violated the Soviet & Nazi treaty. In August 1941, they jointly invaded Iran to secure a vital supply line for Lend-Lease aid going to the Soviets. This invasion forced the removal of the Shah and put his young son on the throne, while the Allies effectively controlled the country.

After the war ended, the US, UK, and Soviets had pledged to leave. But only the US and UK followed through. The Soviets refused to go, instead backing separatist groups in Iran’s northern provinces and arming local forces to delay their departure. The Soviets had tried first to force Iran to surrender their oil to the Soviet Union. This led to a major international crisis in 1946, one of the first tense standoffs of the Cold War.

Honestly the UK, Soviets, and US abused and used Iran and why this gets ignored that they were occupied by joint UK/Soviet operation just a few years previously to this is wild.

  • We need a future where money doesn’t decide politics and appreciate the work to make this an election decided on the issue. Its great day and with a great candidate winning. Having people get involved in their local party can help efforts to better align the party.

The issue about third party candidates might be a little mute in New York which is one of the last few states that has fusion voting in General elections. Its an intersting effort that allows other parties to nominate a candidate or endorse another parties candidate if they align. Seeing that Zohran Mamdani is a DSA member, its one of the voting methods that helped elect Socialist to office at the turn of the last century. Glad New York retains an intersting voting method and that former Governor Andrew Cuomo didn’t succeed in ruining that legacy.

Even if you are more interested in DSA it is still worth joining the local party. I believe the DSA support the “Dirty Break” method to build off the Democrat party line and use that as leverage if they or their policies were to be pushed out.
