If the categorical imperative feels like an ‘objective truth’ to you, how do you know it’s not just a really convincing reality tunnel? Like, how would you test whether it’s actually objective, or just something your brain is really good at justifying?

Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•Is private age verification technically possible and if so how?English
161·4 days agoYou see, if we tell parents that it’s actually super important that they raise their kids, I’m sure they will do it. Just like if we tell everyone that a vaccine for a dangerous disease is a really good idea, everyone will just settle down and go get it.
I always thought it was “Woo! Yeah!” not “Yeah! Woo!”

1·10 days agoGood points, and I agree.
I do like Pinball (I just suck at it) and I always thought the machines are really really neat. I’m happy to see someone bring them up! I suppose it’s just that they’re a bit inaccessible. Having one in your home is a whole thing and going to an arcade is another whole thing.

Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•What’s your most controversial opinion?English
3·11 days agoPinball is grossly under-appreciated, and its progression is a great example of doing new things with old ideas.
Explain.
Not because I strongly disagree, but I’m curious since you bring it up as a controversial take.

shit’s easy. not that they’ll admit defeat but getting them babbling irrational nonsense takes very little debating skills. and when they inevitably start throwing ad hominems, then the mods have legitimate grounds to kick them out.

0·29 days agoI love these kinds of deep dives. If intelligence is happening at this scale, it suggests that “mind” might be the substrate of reality rather than just a byproduct of biology.

32·29 days agoOh yeah, this is perfect for me!

Straight to ad hominem. If I don’t share your reality tunnel, I must be broken? When people can’t justify their beliefs, they default to attacking the person instead of the idea.
