4·29 days agoThe Atlantic found out what family it was based on death records and ended up speaking with them.
There’s nothing explicitly against vaccination for the Amish IIRC, but they’re generally distrustful of modern medicine so their vaccination rates remain low.

collapse of the old society@slrpnk.net•The American Age Is Over
0·30 days agoI think an end in this way was foreseeable. I think a segment of the left, particularly the authoritarian left, had a naïve notion that the end of the US empire would inevitability result in some form of class awareness instead of just nostalgic fascism and evangelical millenarianism.
We’ll need each other more than ever in the death throes.
What a bizarre and shitty take.
Is every citizen of a country entirely responsible for the worst actions of its government? Aren’t like half the posts on .ml about how awful and unresponsive to the will of the governed countries are?
I’ve been tear gassed and shot at by cops for the better part of the last few decades, am I responsible for the actions the government was taking despite my opposition? And not everyone can be in the streets either and the right place for those that can’t can be art. We need people making making dissident media to spread the message.

collapse of the old society@slrpnk.net•How the AIDS crisis helped create a multibillion-dollar death-speculation market
0·2 months agoThey dont offer more than the insurance payout, that’s the whole catch. They give you 20 cents on the dollar today in order to pocket the 80 cents when you die and your family gets nothing.
A very similar thing is dead peasant policies by your employer, who can secretly take out policies on low level employees who have health issues to bet on a payout.

collapse of the old society@slrpnk.net•How the AIDS crisis helped create a multibillion-dollar death-speculation market
0·2 months agoIIRC Its a Wonderful Life was referencing that George was worth more dead than alive, ie he should kill himself for payment of the policy. This is new, that you’d get paid by a 3rd party to take a policy on yourself (or others!) then the 3rd party cashes in and not your estate when you die.

World News@lemmy.ml•In ‘Battle For the Skies’, Russia Outclasses Ukraine on Almost Every Front
22·3 months agoJust to be clear, you think the Ukrainians flew drones all the way to Moscow, navigated them around air defenses, and blew them up at refineries. But instead of filling the warhead with something that would damage the refinery they filled it with Hollywood pyrotechnics because they wanted to look like they damaged the refinery?
I just want to be really clear about what you believe.
I agree, but I don’t think the article is really about the Atlantic’s commitment to creating meaningful change. I think it hits on something important though, which is that those who were most ardently combatting climate change have now pivoted to other political topics or backslid on their commitments.
Climate change is as important as ever but a lot of people on the ground and those in power can’t seem to give a shit.

Green Energy@slrpnk.net•Solar panel recycling yet to close cost gap before waste surge
0·4 months agoThis article isnt sayjng “renewables are bad”. Its saying “EPR is good”. We need those frameworks in place preferably before we get more panels ending up in landfills, because that’s simply wasteful.

0·9 months agoI actually find the fact that becoming a more militarized wartime state has induced similar instances of violence in Russia to be really interesting. Up until this point, most other countries assumed there was something unique about US culture that resulted in school shootings, but showing some sort of hypothetical link between wartime mobilization and mass violence is interesting and the US interventionism has only been increasing along with their mass shootings.

It might shock you to learn the best way to prevent immigration is to make the countries experiencing outflows more stable and liveable, but I’m gonna take a wild guess you don’t like foreign aid.

There sure was a lot of hand wringing before you wrote down what your actual problem with immigration was.
Pray tell what is the ideal demographic make up if the United States?
