AT&T says a massive trove of data impacting 71 million people did not originate from its systems after a hacker leaked it on a cybercrime forum and claimed it was stolen in a 2021 breach of the company.

      Well, you see, they sold that data to a third party, and the third party was hacked. Probably.

        They don’t even have to have sold any data at all. A ton of things handling CPNI that are operated by carriers are directly controlled by third party companies. Including purpose built systems used only by the carrier, but operated and maintained by a third party contract.
