When I was in school, I worked in a coffee shop and I’d down espresso shots/drinks until closing and then jump in the bed.

Twenty years later, I have a cup a few times a week and if I have much more I start to get wired feeling, or have trouble sleeping that night.

I’ve read that’s part of getting older, caffeine just hits a bit harder.

Never felt like I was missing out because coffee is one of the 3 most vile things commonly consumed. The others being peanut butter and pickles.

Coffee has a huge range of flavour from floral, light and almost tea-like to the over-roasted, poorly brewed and left-on-a-heater-to-boil gas station coffee it sounds like you describe.

Most people won’t like coffee the first time. Most people won’t like beer the first time either. Many will continue to not like one or both of those things, but many will acquire a taste for one or the other after they’ve have enough goes on it.

For me, personally, I would have agreed with you once upon a time when it came to drinking coffee, but I was always a bit weird in that I like coffee flavoured ice cream as a kid. (And also the coffee flavoured chocolates in the Cadbury’s Roses and the packets of Revels, when they used to be a thing.) And I guess coffee with a load of milk and sugar was a gateway to coffee with a load of milk, which was a gateway to coffee with maybe just a little bit of milk or a little bit of sugar to take the edge off the bitterness.

It’s not really the taste it’s the sheer bombardment of caffeine to the frontal lobe

I can see that that “panic” feeling of all that caffeine being unbearable, I tend to avoid most things with caffine these days simply because I avoid things with sugar and coffee is just yuck. since caffine is usually found with one of those 2 things along for the ride i have become quite sensitive to it as well.
