Hey r/belgium community,

I hope you’re all doing well. I find myself in a rather dire situation and I’m reaching out here with hopes of finding some advice, support, or perhaps even a solution.

I’m currently in Belgium as an Au Pair, and I’ve been very open with my desire to pursue a 2nd Bachelor’s degree here to my current host parents. Initially, they were supportive of this idea, under the condition that I could balance my studies with my Au Pair responsibilities. I went ahead and processed my university application, paid tuition fees, secured housing, and took out health insurance, expecting to transition smoothly.

However, just two weeks ago, my host parents decided not to stand as my guarantor for my student visa, citing potential risks. This left me in a difficult spot because, as a third-country national, I must submit proof of solvency to switch my visa to a student visa. This requires either a guarantor or a blocked account with €11,500 – a sum I currently don’t have access to.

I’ve exhausted all my available options, and returning to my home country isn’t something I want to consider, as it doesn’t align with my personal and career goals. I’m willing to work part-time and use my small savings to cover my expenses while studying.

If anyone in this community has any suggestions, advice, or perhaps knows of someone willing to assist me by standing as a guarantor on paper (as I’ll bear all the financial responsibilities), I would be immensely grateful. I do have potential guarantors, but they don’t meet the specific requirements due to their non-EU status and income levels.

I understand that this is a tough ask, but I’m truly passionate about my education and career, and I’m willing to put in the effort required to make it work. Your support or guidance could make a world of difference in my life right now.

Thank you for taking the time to read my story, and I appreciate any help or advice you can offer.
