What were your favorite video essays of 2023?
Wouldn’t it just be hbomberguy’s yearly video?
I think this is plainly referring to TechConnections talking about light switches.
Oh shit, you’re right, okay game on
Will it be decided by a tournament bracket?
He would certainly receive a nomination every year if the category existed
That’s exactly what I came in here to post
My partner and I were tearing up by the end, it was so well done!
Hbomberguy’s 4 hour take down of YouTube plagiarists has been my favourite video of the year
It was such a banger
I’d like to nominate Ahoy’s deep dive into the arcade game Polybius and whether it was real (spoil alert: it isn’t)
My memory is shot so who knows what else I thought was good this year but Super Smash Bros Melee will always be in my heart, especially when it’s something as insane as a Yoshi for the first time since the game released 20+ years ago, who also isn’t from the strongest region (NA), to win a tourney.
Cant wait to check it out!!
I nominate Fredrik Knudsen for his 6 hour video about EVE Online
YES
Ahoy should host
He’d get the special fx award for his motion graphics.
I nominate Joseph Anderson’s non-existent 5 hours long Witcher 3 critique.
Then Adam Neely gets my nomination.
I like ButterPrime, who typically talks about entertainment media
Finally someone speaking me language
No, how about an essay is an essay, no matter if you film yourself reading it or not. The content of the message is what is important, not the medium it’s presented in.
Do you think a video essay is just someone reading off of a piece of paper in front of a camera?
Yep that’s what it means, a video of an essay. Unless you’re down with El Hombre or the vatos
No
Marshall McLuhan might disagree.
The medium is the message.
Are you upset that the Oscars only consider films and not books?
Producing a video and writing an essay are two very different forms of work.
But because there is a similar end result does not mean the process is remotely the same.
