What was explained to me: Guyana and Venezuela both have claimed the territory for 123 years or so, both have legal claims that are probably legally valid under their own legal regime. (Guyana was part of the UK then, I suppose.) The disputed territory is 67% of Guyana (😱). There’s a Venezuelan referendum today (the 3rd) about whether to annex that, but it’s unclear if that will have an effect. Claiming the territory also means claiming its offshore bits, where oil was recently discovered. Great Satan will back Guyana, possibly militarily, to keep that oil open to its corporations.
