F150 with new:
Head gasket Valves Timing kit Cht sensor
Code p1299 is showing as permanent, and the truck will not start. If hit with ether is starts right away and runs fine. No over heat. No other codes. Has been driven for hours on highway and city. No issues. After driving, shut off and immediately tried to restart, same problem. Cranks, no start. Shot some ether, started right up and ran fine again. Still no other codes. What am I missing? Any help is appreciated.
1299 is a cylinder head temperature sensor. Diagnose proper and/or replace. Check your coolant level as well
I would not overlook the code shown. Check the wiring to the sensor and if it appears ok, maybe consider that the new sensor was bad out of the box. I remember on one truck I had, I was having similar issues with starting, but once started it was fine. The entire time it only had a temp sensor code, but I didn’t think that was the problem, chased 100 other things to no avail, then did change the temp sensor and was fixed just that easy.
An important part of the equation is that there were no codes prior to the repairs. The head gasket, coils, injectors, plugs and timing chain were done as a preemptive because the engine was having misfire issues. After everything was done it wouldn’t start and had the p1299 code. Hit it with starting fluid and it runs fine. The misfire issues are gone, have drove about 100 miles so far flawlessly other than the no start. It never over heated or failed, and always started fine before the service. Also got a new battery, it didn’t change anything, but it was old and bad anyway. The thermostat is good, and the heat works properly as well. Air has been purged from cooling system, and it is full.

Check the cylinder head temp sensor in live data. See if it’s reading accurate. If it’s bad they’ll often read something like it’s -40 and be quite hard to start.
And what motor do you have?
.
