I get the impression that the dems basically gambled everything on the offensive, they built it up in the media, scavenged whatever they could, and it was supposed to get some big results and then the media would run with it. Joe would win the election riding on having defeated Russia and saved the free world.
Instead it failed in the most spectacular way possible, and they don’t really have any cards left to play now. They can’t convince Russia to freeze the conflict until after the elections, and it’s likely Russia will go on an offensive of their own come winter. So there could be a collapse in Ukraine happening as the election season heats up.
Seems like throwing Biden under the bus is the only move they have left in that situation. You all of a sudden discover that Biden has a lot of business dealings in Ukraine, that he may be compromised, and that he has a big conflict of interest running the war. Blame it all on him and hope you can distance the party from the debacle somehow.
The real question whom the dems will float as a replacement since they don’t have a single candidate that’s known or liked at this point. Perhaps they try to pump up Newsom?
I agree with this. I watch the Duran and they seem to be thinking the same as well. neocons absolutely want out of Ukraine so they can focus on war with China. Like you and others have pointed out, I don’t think there’s a viable replacement for Biden, so they’re probably just gonna hand Trump another term. Maybe neocons can politically maneuver and electioneer their way to a Trump victory, but I suspect this is going to come a steep price.
A Trump election could easily lead to some kind of constitutional crisis with his persecution and election shenanigans within the US. We’d probably see an Afghanistan 2.0 in Ukraine while the US pulls out. That’s an enormous luxury for the US to abandon Ukraine, and I don’t see how Europe would go along with it. Europe has sacrificed immensely for Ukraine, so I think the US suddenly abandoning that project could precipitate a NATO schism. And on the other hand, re-electing Biden would result in another 4 years of empire in free-fall like we’ve seen from the current admin.
No matter how the US plays its hand in 2024, I don’t see any good outcomes for the US. The available evidence suggests the current US state is in deep distress.
I definitely expect that this is the start of the end of NATO and likely the EU. Europeans will see that they got used, and their economic situation is going to keep getting worse. Countries will have to prioritize domestic economies, and that’s going to be completely at odds with what EU will be demanding.
