The “Train hitting Bus” meme. The first panel is the bus going on the train track with the caption “Five minute job”. The second panel is the train hitting the bus, saying “While you’re here”.
Me spending hours putting together a FAQ document and putting it in slack.
Coworker: hey I have a question on x. Can we pull up? Five minutes tops.
Me: did you read the FAQ?
Coworker: yes but it’s a bit different.
Jump on a call, sharing my screen and going through the document line by line, taking up a full hour.
My thoughts go two directions on this.
When dealing with external customers: “Sure. Just give our account manager a quick call and we can get you a quote for that.” That always solves the problem one way or another.
When dealing with my own company’s IT group: “If you assholes hadn’t spent the last two weeks ignoring my ticket to get you to fix this issue that you guys caused in the first place, I wouldn’t have had to resort to these underhanded tactics.”
“I’m an hourly employee, and since no OT is allowed, I am now an independent consultant. My rate is $500 an hour with a three hour minimum charge. Who should I make the invoice out to?”
